It’s going to be next to impossible for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds to duplicate the magic we saw at last year’s inaugural MLB Field of Dreams Game.

Come on, a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth that majestically sailed into the night sky before landing in a sea of corn just 500 feet from where Field of Dreams was filmed? Seriously, was that heaven or what?

And let’s get real here. With all due respect to the Cubs and Reds, the 2022 edition simply doesn’t have the star power we had a year ago with the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Nor does this game much matter in the standings. The Cubs enter Thursday night’s matchup with a 45-65 record, while the Reds come to Dyersville, Iowa, one game worse at 44-66.

But let’s also get real on something else. None of that matters. The real star of this game is the field and the environment as a whole. There’s a reason last year’s game was the most-watched regular-season matchup on any network in 16 years. Nostalgia sells, and the Field of Dreams game has plenty of that.

So with that in mind, if nothing else, at least the Cubs and Reds will look incredible.

What throwback uniforms will the Cubs and Reds wear in the Field of Dreams Game?

As the Yankees and White Sox did a year ago, the Chicago and Cincinnati will don throwback uniforms during the Field of Dreams game. But as both teams have a history dating back to the 1800s, which did they choose?

Just as the Yanks and Sox did last year, the Reds are going with the uniforms worn in 1919, the year of the infamous Black Sox scandal. Cincinnati, of course, was on the winning end of that 1919 World Series. After going 96-44 in the regular season, the Reds “beat” the South Siders in eight games, 5-3. MLB tried a best-of-nine format from 1919 to 1921.

Cincy used this ensemble quite a bit from 1914 to 1920, and I gotta say that outside of the Field of Dreams itself, these Reds batting helmets might be the biggest star of Thursday night’s matchup.

As for the Cubs, they’ll actually be rocking a mashup. The jerseys and pants are from the 1929 season in which they went 98-54 on the way to the NL pennant before losing the World Series to the Philadelphia Athletics in five games. As for the hats, those are from the 1914 season in which they went 78-76 and finished fourth in the National League.

So there you have it. Pregame festivities for the 2022 Field of Dreams game begin at 7:15 p.m. Eastern on FOX.
