Wyndham Clark has made history while propelling himself to the top of the leaderboard at The Players Championship, the tournament widely viewed as the unofficial fifth major. The American heads into Saturday at -14 with a four-shot lead over Xander Schauffele and Nick Taylor. Matthieu Pavon didn’t make the cut (+3), nor did Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.
Wyndham Clark headed to TPC Sawgrass sitting in fifth in the Official World Golf Rankings, and he’s poised to improve that position after shooting 65 in his first two rounds at The Players Championship, which marks the best start in the history of the tournament.
Setting off early for his second round, the winner of the 2023 US Open copied and pasted his previous day’s card (8 birdies, 1 bogey). This gave him a four-shot lead over Xander Schauffele (69) and Nick Taylor (68).
If he’s able to hold his lead until play wraps up on Friday, the world No. 5 would climb two places into third. There’s still a lot of golf to be played, but that hasn’t stopped him from enjoying his start to the tournament: “It’s cool, I’m feeling really good on the greens. I’d already broken a record recently at Pebble Beach. I’d love to play every week, but it’s true that big events make me better. When I look at Scottie [Scheffler] he’s always playing well. He’s a role model I try to follow.”
