Perez had some magic off the tee on Friday.
Perez stepped up to the par-3 sixth hole with a 7-iron in his hands. The Frenchman was in 31st place at the time with a score of 3-over.
The announcer exclaimed that Perez hit a straight shot that was “going right after it.”
The ball landed at the front of the green, bounced three times, and rolled into the cup for a hole-in-one.
The crowd erupted on the sixth hole. Perez fed off the energy of the crowd before chest-bumping his caddie, James Erkenbeck, and embracing his playing partners, Jacob Bridgeman and Adam Schenk.
Perez’s ace is only the second hole-in-one recorded during the U.S. Open at Oakmont.
The first ace came from Scott Simpson during the first round of the 1983 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Simpson made his hole-in-one on the 16th hole.
Perez, the 99th-ranked player in the world, has never made the cut in a U.S. Open. That will change thanks to his heroics on Friday.
Perez carded an even-par 70 in his second round, bringing his 36-hole total to 1-over. That will certainly be good enough to play the weekend.
Patrick Reed Cards An Albatross

Carding a hole-in-one in the U.S. Open hardly ever happens. However, scoring an albatross is even rarer.
Patrick Reed joined elite company on Thursday when he recorded a double eagle on the par-5 fourth hole at Oakmont.
Standing 286 yards away, Reed hit a wood to the green, causing his ball to bounce and roll until it fell into the cup. Reed was so far away that he didn’t even know when the ball went in.
Reed became the fourth player in U.S. Open history* to record an albatross.
*U.S. Open started keeping records in 1983.
