Sharks trade Henry Thrun to Maple Leafs

The San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs made a trade on Thursday. The Sharks sent defenseman Henry Thrun of Southborough, Massachusetts to the Toronto Maple Leafs for right winger Ryan Reaves of Winnipeg, Manitoba according to Rogers Sportsnet.

Henry Thrun

Thrun had two goals and 10 assists for 12 points in 60 regular season games in 2024-25 with the Sharks. He was a -23 with 30 penalty minutes, 52 shots on goal, 66 blocked shots, 43 hits, 12 takeaways and 37 giveaways.

This was Thrun’s third full season with the Sharks. In 119 National Hockey League regular season games from 2022 to 2025, he had five goals and 20 assists for 25 points. Thrun was a -48 with 46 penalty minutes, four power-play points, 107 shots on goal, 146 blocked shots, 73 hits, 30 takeaways, and 71 giveaways.

Thrun was selected in the fourth round, 101st overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. He could not come to a contract agreement with the Ducks, and they subsequently received a third round pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft from the Sharks for Thrun on February 28, 2023. The Ducks selected right winger Maxim Masse of Rimouski, Quebec. At the international level, Thrun won a gold medal for the United States at the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championship in Edmonton.

Ryan Reaves

Reaves has significantly more NHL experience than Thrun, but was less productive from an offensive standpoint this past season. In 35 games in 2024-25, Reaves only had two assists for two points. He was a -2 with 28 penalty minutes, 14 shots on goal, eight blocked shots, 103 hits, four takeaways, and 10 giveaways.

Both of Reaves’s assists came in Maple Leafs wins. The first assist was on November 9, 2024, in a 4-1 Maple Leafs win over their archival, Montreal Canadiens. Reaves set up defenseman Conor Timmins of St. Catharines, Ontario with five minutes and five seconds left in the first period to open the scoring. The second assist was on New Year’s Eve in a 3-1 Maple Leafs win over the New York Islanders. Reaves set up forward Steven Lorentz at 12:15 of the second period for the game-winning goal which broke a 1-1 deadlock.

Known for his physicality throughout his career, Reaves has 1000 penalty minutes and 3065 hits in 912 regular season games. Since 2010, Reaves has played with six NHL franchises. In addition to the Maple Leafs, Reaves has been with the St. Louis Blues, Pittsburgh Penguins, Vegas Golden Knights, New York Rangers and Minnesota Wild.
