The 2025 Mubadala Citi Open officially ushers in the US leg of the hardcourt tennis season. Qualifying for the only combined ATP/WTA 500 tournament begins on July 19, the same day the draw is announced. First round play begins on July 21, and the final matches are on July 27.
This tournament was held at an interesting time last season as players were opting to prepare for the 2024 Paris Olympics or starting the US Open hardcourt preparation. The defending singles champions are Sebastian Korda, the first American men’s champion since Andy Roddick in 2007, and Paula Badosa. Both are dealing with injuries so it is unclear if either can defend the title.
Who Is Out Of Mubadala Citi Open?
Badosa recently announced that she will be out for a few weeks with a tear to her psoas (muscle that runs from lower back to hip). This implies that she will not be in Washington, DC, and it also indicates that her chronic back injuries are not completely behind her.

Sebastian Korda skipped Wimbledon with a stress fracture in his shin. His return date is unknown though he was spotted on the practice court recently.

Who Is In At Mubadala Citi Open?
The top five ATP seeds are expected to be: Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Musetti, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, and Alex de Minaur.
The top three WTA seeds are expected to be: Jessica Pegula (the 2019 and 2021 champion), Qinwen Zheng, and Amanda Anisimova.
A slight surprise that 2023 Mubadala Citi Open champion Coco Gauff is not on the players’ list.
Venus Williams accepted a wildcard and will play her first competitive tennis match in nearly 18 months.
Nick Kyrgios will be in Washington, DC and is listed as a doubles partner for Gael Monfils.
Hometown favorite Frances Tiafoe is playing singles and doubles with his good friend Ben Shelton.
Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton share a hug at the net after their match at the US Open.
No matter who wins, there’s so much love here.
One of the most wholesome net exchanges you’re ever gonna see.
Rooting for both of them. 🇺🇸🥹
