Wimbledon Day 5 Best Bets: Raducanu Eyes Upset, Norrie Poised to Advance, Anisimova in Form

The British are winning big in Washington, DC on the second day of the Mubadala Citi Open; Emma Raducanu and Cam Norrie recorded somewhat surprising upsets in their opening round singles matches.

Raducanu, currently ranked World No. 46, defeated Marta Kostyuk, World No. 27, in straight sets. Emma Raducanu looked quite happy to get by Kostyuk after a tight first set. After the match, she mentioned to Rennae Stubbs that she needs to recover and get ready for the “ER squared” doubles match scheduled for Thursday against Guuliana Olmos and Aldila Sutjiadi. Her doubles partner is fellow Grand Slam champion Elena Rybakina.

Speaking of Grand Slam champions, Emma Raducanu could face Naomi Osaka in the second round. Osaka is currently on court playing Yulia Putinsteva.

Minutes before Emma Raducanu’s win, Cam Norrie recorded his own upset.

Cam Norrie, currently ranked World No. 41, defeated World No. 7 Lorenzo Musetti in three sets. It is Norrie’s first win over a Top 10 player since the 2023 Indian Wells Open.

Musetti has been in a bit of slump, losing in the first round in DC and earlier in the month at Wimbledon. On the other hand, Norrie is having a great summer, losing in the semifinals at Wimbledon to Carlos Alcaraz.

45-year-old Venus Williams’ return to tennis has been a headline of the Mubadala Citi Open. After winning her opening doubles match with Hailey Baptiste, Williams  takes the court on Tuesday night in singles against 23-year-old Peyton Stearns. It will be her first competitive singles match since the 2024 Miami Open last March.
