Remember that brief interlude when I thought the Mubadala Citi Open was a bit ho-hum this year? Well, that changed on Sunday night when Alex de Minaur fought back from three championship points down to win the ATP 500 title in 3 hours and 3 minutes.

De Minaur exalted as Alejandro Davidovich Fokina covered his face in a towel. Both players gave everything they had in blistering heat, but de Minaur’s calm demeanor, fitness, and shots that fell in by mere millimeters were the difference.

With the win, de Minaur earns his 10th career title (15th active player to earn double digits in titles), the first of the year. Eight of those titles were on hard courts. This is his 22nd hard court win of the year which leads the ATP. Alex de Minaur is now an impressive 35-13 this year, tied for second (behind Carlos Alcaraz) with the most wins in the ATP. He will climb back into the Top 10, becoming the World No. 8 when the new rankings come out.

Alex de Minaur was a finalist seven years ago to Alexander Zverev so the win is especially significant. He becomes the fifth Australian to win this title behind Ken Rosewall, Tony Roach, Lleyton Hewitt, and Nick Kyrgios.

As for Davidovich Fokina, he was vying for his first career ATP title. He lost a close final before earlier this year in Delray against Miomir Kechmanovic where he had two match points so it undoubtedly hurts more because of that. At one point before the trophy presentation, de Minaur went over to Davidovich Fokina’s bench, sat with him, and offered consolation. Alex de Minaur is fluent in Spanish, and we can only wonder what conversation the two men shared and if it could possibly ease Davidovich Fokina’s angst.

Next to the Alcaraz and Sinner Roland Garros final, this match, especially the third set, could be the best men’s tennis final of the year.
