Liam Neeson puts his leg up.

One of the most iconic action-comedy franchises returns to theaters this weekend, as The Naked Gun attempts to attract a new generation of fans. Will this legacy sequel draw a big crowd? View the box office odds and predictions for The Naked Gun.

What Is The Naked Gun About?

Frank Drebin, Police Squad.

30 years after Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, the adventures of Lieutenant Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) have been passed down to his son, Frank Drebin Jr. (Liam Neeson).

In the 2025 movie, the Police Squad is in danger of shutting down. Frank is tasked with figuring out who murdered the brother of Beth Davenport (Pamela Anderson). If Frank doesn’t solve the case, say goodbye to his unit.

The Naked Gun trailer includes the franchise’s signature slapstick humor and dumb gags. One of the highlights includes Frank going undercover as a Girl Scout. He removes the mask and takes on a room full of thieves at a bank, all while wearing a skirt.

The Naked Gun stars Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Cody Rhodes, Liza Koshy, Eddie Yu, and Danny Huston.

Akiva Schaffer of The Lonely Island directs The Naked Gun from a screenplay he co-wrote with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Family Guy’s Seth MacFarlane produces alongside Erica Huggins.

The Naked Gun is based on Police Squad!, an ’80s comedy series from the comedic trio of David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker.

This is the first Naked Gun film without Leslie Nielsen, who died in 2010.

The Naked Gun arrives in theaters on August 1, 2025.

Will audiences support a theatrical comedy from a major studio? It’s one of the biggest dilemmas in Hollywood right now. Comedies — including movies and stand-up comedy — are thriving on streaming.

However, studio comedies are hard sells unless there’s a genre element to them. For example, Deadpool & Wolverine is an action comedy and a superhero movie. Barbie had comedic elements, but it’s more of a dramedy based on an iconic IP.

The Naked Gun will be an interesting test case for the state of theatrical comedies. Polymarket has The Naked Gun favored to open to less than $17 million (+178). For a movie with a budget of $42 million, that’s not a bad opening.

What’s working in The Naked Gun’s favor are the positive reviews. The movie has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Update: The Naked Gun opened to $16.8 million at the domestic box office (+178)
