With the emergence of August is a renewed emphasis on WTA live rankings and who will likely finish in the top eight to participate in November’s WTA Finals. Contrary to some opinions, the tennis season is not over after the US Open. There is an extensive Asian swing to follow which may not have its biggest star back for: Qinwen Zheng is recovering from elbow surgery.
Three players are emerging as needing to play well this summer and fall to qualify for the WTA Finals: Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, and Emma Navarro. Pegula and Paolini were in the 2024 WTA Finals. Navarro was bumped for 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Aryna Sabalenka is the only player who is automatically qualified by virtue of points. Her title victories and presence in Grand Slam finals has merited the points needed to do so.

We also know that the rule used last year to add Krejcikova means that the year’s Grand Slam champions will automatically be in. Coco Gauff (second in live rankings), Iga Swiatek (third in live rankings), and Madison Keys (seventh in live rankings) will qualify even if they would fall outside the top eight.
With Sabalenka, Gauff, Swiatek, and Keys taking four spots, there are four remaining. Assuming one of the aforementioned do no win the US Open, the US Open champion will claim a fifth.
The 2025 winners of WTA 1000 tournaments: Mirra Andreeva (Indian Wells and Dubai) and Amanda Anisimova (Wimbledon finalist and Doha champion) will contend for two spots if they perform well this summer.
Those women would occupy seven of the eight positions.
That puts Jessica Pegula, World No. 4, who despite winning three titles this year (Charleston, WTA 500, Austin WTA 250, and Bad Homburg WTA 500) is not defending her points surge from last summer. She lost early at Wimbledon, in Washington, DC, and at the Canadian Open where she is a two-time defending champion. If she does not perform well in Cincinnati or the US Openn (where she was a finalist last year), she could be out of the top eight.
Jasmine Paolini and Emma Navarro are in more difficult circumstances. Paolini was the French Open and Wimbledon finalist in 2024; she did not defend those points with repeat success. She is World No. 9 with one title win at her home tournament, the WTA 1000 Italian Open earlier this summer. Emma Navarro has suffered from a sophomore slump and is currently World No. 11 with a title victory in the Merida Open (WTA 500).
Of course, any of the three would be shoo-ins if they win the 2025 US Open, earning an automatic bid along with 2,000 ranking points.
