The Packers will be without their quarterback for a short period.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst announced Tuesday that Love is undergoing surgery to repair a ligament injury in his left thumb.
Gutekunst said Love suffered the injury after being sacked on his last play against the New York Jets in Saturday’s preseason opener.
The good news is that the Packers expect Love to be ready for Week 1. Love could return to practice as early as next week if all goes well.
“He certainly was able to function, but as we looked at all the options and he did as well. The best option I think for him to get back the fastest and feel the best was to do this,” Gutekunst said via Packers.com. “He wanted to go out there yesterday to see how it felt, and once we got through that, we made the decision, and … he should meet us in Indy on Wednesday.”
Love will not practice this week when the team holds a joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts. Love has been ruled out for Saturday’s preseason game against the Colts.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said it’s “highly unlikely” that Love plays in the team’s preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks. However, the team is extremely optimistic that Love will return to practice this month. LaFleur says, following the procedure, Love should have a “relatively quick recovery.”
“We’ll get him back in plenty of time,” Gutekunst said. “I don’t foresee this affecting him long-term at all.”
On the positive side, the injury is to Love’s non-throwing hand. While it might affect how he handles the ball, it should not affect his throwing hand.

Since LaFleur became the head coach in 2019, the Packers own the fourth-best record in the NFL (67-33).
LaFleur won 13 games in three consecutive seasons with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
After missing the postseason in 2022, the Packers parted ways with Rodgers and turned the offense over to Love. In his first season as the starter, Love threw for 4,159 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
Love and the seventh-seeded Packers went into the Wild Card Round that season and destroyed the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys by a score of 48-32. The Packers fell to the San Francisco 49ers the following week.
Love’s numbers dipped in 2024 — 3,389 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Despite missing time with injuries, Love led the Packers to the postseason, where they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round.
The Packers play host to the Detroit Lions in Week 1.
