Ahead of the Ryder Cup, Rory McIlroy was asked about the possibility of being a playing captain in future competitions.

Rory McIlroy Asked About Being A Player And Captain At Ryder Cup

McIlroy heads into the 2025 Ryder Cup as Team Europe’s No. 1-ranked player.

Luke Donald will be the captain when Team Europe heads to Bethpage this September. However, eyes are already on the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland.

Naturally, McIlroy, a Northern Ireland native, has been mentioned as a potential captain for 2027. Assuming he stays healthy, McIlroy will be playing for Team Europe in two years.

Would McIlroy ever consider being a player and a captain at the Ryder Cup?

“No, I’ve been asked to do that, and I’ve turned it down,” McIlroy said on Wednesday about being a player captain via Golf.com. “The idea of me being a playing captain sometime soon coming up has come up, and I’ve shot it down straight away.”

McIlroy mentioned how the Ryder Cup has become such a phenomenon over the years.

“If you’d have said it 20 years ago, I’d say, yeah, it was probably possible to do,” McIlroy explained. “But how big of a spectacle and everything that’s on the line in a Ryder Cup now, I just think it would be a very difficult position to be in.”

The Ryder Cup captain has media responsibilities throughout the week that might make it difficult to focus on playing and running the team.

“The captain isn’t going to be on the course all day, so the captain is only going to be able to play one session on Friday, one session on Saturday,” McIlroy said. “Would you not rather have the flexibility to go twice if he’s playing well? There’s just a lot of different things that go into it.”

Will Keegan Bradley Be A Player And A Captain?

While McIlroy won’t be a player captain, Keegan Bradley of the United States might consider doing so. Bradley will captain the United States at Bethpage this month.

Bradley also happens to be 10th in the Ryder Cup standings. The top six automatically qualify, leaving the final six spots to be determined by the captain. Bradley said he would not be a player captain unless he won a tournament this year.

Lo and behold, Bradley won the Travelers Championship in June, opening the door to be a player captain.

While Bradley acknowledges McIlroy “might be right” about the strains of being a player captain, he’s also not ready to close the door on the captainship.

“How do you deal with the media? How do you deal with corporate obligations? In this instance, there’s no one to call,” Bradley said. “So nobody knows how this could work.”

The Ryder Cup will be played September 26-28.
