Taylen Kinney broke out as one of the 2026 recruiting class’s best guards this summer. Playing for Wildcat Select on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit, Kinney ascended to consensus top-20 status as one of the better point guards in his class. The 6-foot-1, bruising guard played in the Overtime Elite league last season and has received lots of high major attention.

What makes Kinney a strong prospect?

Kinney, who averaged 18 points and 4.7 assists on 55.4% true shooting in 3SSB play this summer, weaponizes a tight handle, great athleticism and passing vision to score and pass at all levels. He’s a promising offensive prospect even if he lacks the high-end playmaking or scoring tools to fit in as a lead guard at the college and NBA levels.

He adds plenty of value on the defensive end, forcing turnovers with his long wingspan and sharp play recognition. Kinney plays well above his listed height, unleashing his length, strength and explosiveness to thrive on and off-ball on defense. His two-way skillset renders him an easy high major guard projection, at the very least

Kentucky are early favorites for Kinney

At the moment, On3’s prediction machine views the Kentucky Wildcats as early favorites to land Kinney. Kinney grew up in Newport, Kentucky, which sits just 73 miles away from his hometown. The Wildcats often do well with in-state recruits and he would be a strong first piece for head coach Mark Pope’s 2026 recruiting class.

Louisville and Purdue also have interest

Louisville will also contend for Kinney’s services as the other main in-state competitor, still within 100 miles of his hometown. Head coach Pat Kelsey’s guard-centric offense has already helped players like Chucky Hepburn excel. His 2025 recruiting and transfer class, which features high-profile guards like Mikel Brown Jr. and Adrian Wooley, could entice him to choose the Cardinals as his future school.

Purdue head coach Matt Painter’s offense would fit his pick-and-roll skillset, allowing him to play in space with plenty of shooting around him. The Boilermakers already have a commitment from 2026 four-star guard Luke Ertel, which could influence Kinney to pick a program with fewer guards to take touches away from him.

Where should Kinney commit?

He already took an official visit to Purdue in January, though, indicating at least some level of interest from his camp. Pope visited Kinney himself in April and Kinney also took official visits to Kentucky and Louisville in June with official visits to Kansas, Indiana, Oregon, Arkansas and Texas scheduled in August and September

For his long-term NBA prospects, choosing to play for Pope and Kentucky could bode best for Kinney. An offense with plenty of off-ball movement and spacing will help maximize his offensive talents, letting him show NBA teams how he fares in a more pro-style system.
