The US Open Mixed Doubles championship includes on Wednesday night on ESPN beginning at 7 PM ET. This event has drawn more attention to tennis’s mixed doubles discipline than ever before.
On Monday 16 teams began play. At the end of Monday, four teams remained.
Who Are The Four Teams Left In The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship?
The top seeded team of Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula remains. Despite barely knowing each other prior to the US Open, they played well in two matches on Monday earning them the moniker of “Dragula.”
Drapegula will kick off Wednesday night’s action in a semifinal match against the third seeded team of Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. Swiatek rushed from Cincinnati to play, and the results have been good so far.
Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison, the all American team called to action after Jannik Sinner withdrew, take on the all-Italian team of Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori in the second semifinal expected to begin around 8:10 PM ET.
At 9:20 PM, the two semifinal winners will play each other.
Who Wins The US Open Mixed Doubles Championship?
All four teams are capable of hoisting the trophy.
The question is will the teams with players more accustomed to playing doubles win? Those are the defending US Open champions of Errani and Vavassori. Errani is an eight-time Grand Slam doubles champion (6 women’s and 2 mixed) and far and away, the most accomplished doubles player left in the draw.
Jessica Pegula is also an accomplished doubles player with seven WTA titles as well as being a 2022 French Open finalist (with Coco Gauff) and 2023 US Open mixed doubles finalist (with Austin Krajicek).
Draper, Swiatek, and Ruud have never won a doubles title.
Though there was much dissent and consternation over the updated format and scheduling, this year’s US Open mixed doubles championship is the most talked about mixed doubles event (outside of the Olympics) in years. Crowning a champion team will probably not quell the controversy, but from a fan’s perspective, this year’s event has been fun to watch.
