The 49ers have added much-needed depth to their backfield.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Commanders are sending Robinson to the 49ers for a 2026 sixth-round pick. The Commanders will save $3.3 million in salary cap space thanks to this move.
Earlier this week, Robinson agreed to sit out Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals as the team explored a trade before the 53-man roster deadline on Tuesday.
Injuries have decimated the 49ers this training camp, especially at running back. Christian McCaffrey missed most of last season due to injuries to his calf, Achilles, and PCL.
Even though McCaffrey is healthy to start the season, the 49ers want to lighten the workhorse’s load to keep him fresh for a potential postseason run.
To save McCaffrey from some big hits, the 49ers need depth in their backfield. Unfortunately, McCaffrey’s backups are dealing with injuries.
Patrick Taylor Jr. is on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, and rookie Jordan James is currently out with a broken finger. Although Isaac Guerendo previously missed time with a shoulder injury, he returned to practice this week.
The addition of Robinson gives the 49ers a viable backup behind McCaffrey.
Robinson’s career almost ended before it began after being shot twice during an armed robbery a week before his rookie season kicked off. Robinson suffered no serious injuries and missed the first four games of the season.
Robinson has been extremely consistent in his three NFL seasons, finishing each with at least 733 yards rushing. Last season, Robinson rushed for 789 yards and a career-high eight touchdowns.
The 26-year-old can also be a threat in the passing game, as evidenced by his five receiving touchdowns two seasons ago.
Robinson is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

While it might come as a surprise to move on from Robinson this soon, the Washington Commanders feel like they have significant depth at running back.
The Commanders’ backfield includes Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols, Chris Rodriguez, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt.
Ekeler will likely continue to be the Commanders’ passing-down back, while Rodriguez and Croskey-Merritt do most of their work running between the tackles.
Truthfully, the Commanders’ best running back is their quarterback, Jayden Daniels, who rushed for 891 yards and six touchdowns during his rookie campaign.
