NFL Injuries: Tyrod Taylor Would Start For Jets If Justin Fields Misses Time

The New York Jets suffered a tough loss on Sunday to the Buffalo Bills. But that may not be the end of their NFL weekend worries, as the immediate health of starting quarterback Justin Fields is now in serious question.

NFL Injuries: Justin Fields Goes Down With Apparent Concussion

Early in the fourth quarter of their Week 2 divisional matchup, the Jets were trailing 30-3 and Fields was struggling. Though the first three quarters in his second start with New York, Fields was just 3 of 11 passing and had amassed just 27 yards through the air.

The Jets’ offense had just one drive of 5+ plays through the first three quarters.

After being sacked for the second time in the game by Nick Bosa, Fields left the game with 14:42 on the clock and never returned. He went into the injury tent on the sideline for several minutes, before walking back into the locker room.

Long time NFL quarterback and journeyman Tyrod Taylor took over, and he completed 7 of 11 passes for 56 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown in relief of Fields. The Jets still lost by 20, but the offense certainly looked more competent with Taylor under center.

Tyrod Taylor Would Be Jets’ Starter If Fields Is Out

The job could be his for at least the next game. Justin Fields will now enter the league’s concussion protocol, and there isn’t a lot of hope that he’ll pass the necessary tests by the time Week 3 rolls around. The Jets should have some confidence in Taylor’s abilities, though he is certainly past his best days as a quarterback.

Tyrod Taylor has started 58 games in his now-15 year NFL career, and played in 36 others. His best days came with the Buffalo Bills, where he was the team’s full-time starter for three seasons. He was eventually replaced by Josh Allen, and his on his fifth team since.

Taylor started games for the Browns, Chargers, Texans, Giants, and Jets since 2018. He appeared in two games in relief of Aaron Rodgers last season for New York, and completed 77.3% of his passes and notched two touchdowns.
