Colts Join 2007 Patriots As Only Teams In NFL History To Pull Off This Feat

The Indianapolis Colts may be the biggest surprise of the 2025 NFL season. They’ve not only hopped out to a 3-0 start, but they’re doing things that only some of the best teams in the history of the league have achieved.

Colts Make NFL History With Offensive Efficiency

During the first two games of the season, the Daniel Jones and the Colts offense was humming. They scored a total of 62 points against the Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos, but it was their efficiency that was the most impressive.

Against the Dolphins, they scored on all seven of their possessions in a 33-8 victory. A week later against the Broncos, they possessed the ball nine times, not including the kneel-down at the end of the first half. They scored on seven of those drives, with the other two ending in failed 4th-down conversions.

In total, the team had 17 offensive possessions through the first two games, and didn’t punt a single time.

The streak ended in NFL Week 3, but came during a game in which Jones and the Colts were in full control. On Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, with 9:20 left in the second quarter, Rigoberto Sanchez saw his first action of the season, as the Colts were forced to punt for the first time in over 11 quarters of play.

It was the only time that Indianapolis punted during the 41-20 rout.

Indy Joins 2007 Patriots In This Rare Feat

Jones and the Colts have joined elite NFL with their ability to avoid punts. The only other team in the history of the league to start a season 3-0 while punting fewer than 5 times was the 2007 New England Patriots, who finished that regular season with an undefeated record.

Tom Brady’s Patriots punted four times in those three games. Daniel Jones’ Colts have punted once.

Through the first three weeks of the 2025 NFL season, Jones is having a career resurgence. He has amassed 860 throwing yards while completing 74% of his passes, and has yet to throw an interception. He has a 113.5 QB rating, and has scored a total of six touchdowns; 3 through the air, and 3 with his legs.

The Colts will face a tough test this coming Sunday. They will travel to the West Coast for Week 4, and will take on the Los Angeles Rams while trying to remain undefeated. Indianapolis is currently listed as a 3.5-point underdog.
