How Can The 49ers Replace Nick Bosa’s Production After Season Ending Injury?

It what has become something of an unfortunate theme, the San Francisco 49ers are dealing with yet another crushing blow when it comes to injuries. After hoping that structural damage was avoided, it was revealed on Monday that defensive end Nick Bosa has suffered a torn ACL, and that he will miss the rest of the 2025 NFL season.

Another Setback For 49ers As Nick Bosa Ruled Out For Season

Late in the first quarter of Sunday’s game between the 49ers and Cardinals, Bosa wound up on the ground after a pass rush. His knee seemed to bend awkwardly on the play, and he walked slowly off of the field and into the blue medical tent on San Francisco’s sideline. He attempted stretching out the ailment for a few minutes, before he headed off into the locker room and staying there for good.

After the game, there was some hope given by head coach Kyle Shanahan that the injury would be minimal. But it ended up being one of the most serious of them all, as it is now the second time that Bosa has torn his ACL in the last five years.

Can San Francisco’s Defense Stay Afloat?

The defense has been one of the strong suits for the 49ers during their 3-0 start to the season, but the loss of Nick Bosa is quite the blow for the unit. They do have a bit of depth at the position, including Bryce Huff who they traded for in the offseason and who they expect to move into the starting role in place of Bosa.

Huff played for the Eagles last season and had 2.5 sacks in 12 games played. In 2023, he played for the Eagles and racked up 10 sacks. He already has two sacks this season, notching one in each of the last two weeks. No other front-seven player for the 49ers aside from Bosa and Huff has sacked the quarterback through the first three weeks.

The latest injury adds to the growing list for the 49ers. Brandon Aiyuk has yet to play this season while recovering from last year’s injury, and George Kittle has been out since Week 1. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been sidelined for two weeks now, and Jauan Jennings has been in and out of the lineup.

San Francisco will play at home in Week 4 when they take on the Jaguars, but will then hit the road for what should be two tougher games. On Thursday, October 2nd they’ll take on the Los Angeles Rams, which will be followed by a date in Tampa Bay with Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers.
