After leading the Bengals to victory in Week 2, Jake Browning couldn’t do anything right against the Minnesota Vikings. Browning finished 19 of 27 for 140 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in a 49-10 loss.
Until further notice, Browning is the quarterback for the Bengals until Joe Burrow returns from injury in December. Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will have to get on the same page with Browning if the Bengals’ offense wants to stay afloat during Burrow’s absence.
Without Burrow at quarterback, Zac Taylor is 8-23 as the Bengals’ head coach.
The best thing a team can do for a backup quarterback is to run the ball. Unfortunately for Browning, the Bengals own the worst rushing attack in the NFL (49.0 yards per game).
Running back Chase Brown, who was projected to be a fantasy breakout, has 93 yards on 47 carries. That comes to an average rush of 2.0 yards per carry, which is abysmal.
The Broncos haven’t been much better than the Bengals. After a promising rookie season, Bo Nix has struggled to start the season. Last week, Nix threw for 153 yards and one touchdown. On the season, Nix is 24th in QBR at 41.8.
Emotionally, Denver has suffered two consecutive losses in backbreaking fashion. One would think that Denver’s bad luck will end this week at home.
The Broncos will probably be played in every teaser this weekend. Without the teaser, I still like Denver to bounce back at home. The Bengals can’t run the ball, and I expect Denver’s so-so pass defense (212.7 yards per game) to improve against a backup quarterback.
Pick: Broncos -7.5 (-105)
Bengals vs. Broncos Prop
Again, the Bengals cannot run the ball right now.
Brown’s rushing prop is 55.5. Until the Bengals prove they can run the ball consistently, I’ll continue to fade Brown.
