Kyle Busch

Kyle Busch’s run with a lame duck crew chief lasted all of one week. As of Wednesday, he’s been assigned a new, interim one.

That crew chief, garage area veteran Andy Street, will call the shots for Busch and the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing team over the last five races of the NASCAR Cup Series season. Street replaces Randall Burnett, who — as announced in late September — will join Trackhouse Racing in 2026. Although no longer the crew chief on Busch’s No. 8, Burnett will remain at RCR in a support role through the end of the season.

Street will debut in his new role this weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL. There, Busch will be looking to snap a winless streak dating back to June 2023.

What Does Andy Street Bring To The Table For Kyle Busch?

While not everyone will recognize the name Andy Street, he’s no stranger to RCR. He’s likewise not new to NASCAR or the responsibilities of being the head wrench for a NASCAR team.

The Kernersville, North Carolina native began working at RCR in 2003. From 2022-2024, he served as crew chief for RCR Xfinity Series driver Austin Hill. Together, the two reached the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. Last year, they made it all the way to the Championship 4.

Street owns 11 wins as an Xfinity Series crew chief. He recorded 10 of those with Hill. The winningest crew chief at RCR the past three seasons, Street has spent 2025 so far as crew chief on RCR’s part-time No. 33 NASCAR Cup Series entry. The car has made seven starts between Hill and Jesse Love this year.

In addition, Street has worked as a crew chief in a very limited capacity this year for the company’s Xfinity Series program. As part of this arrangement, Street has paired with driver Austin Dillon and Kasey Kahne for one race each.

An alumnus of UNC Charlotte where he received a degree in mechanical engineering, Street also serves as RCR’s NASCAR Xfinity Series engineering manager.

What’s The Outlook For The No. 8 Team With Andy Street?

Whether Andy Street will be a good fit for two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch remains to be seen. Ditto for whether he’ll earn the full-time permanent gig as crew chief on the No. 8.

Far more clear is that RCR apparently didn’t feel comfortable with Randall Burnett finishing out his time with the company as the crew chief for Busch. Although the pairing initially bore some fruit, it’s been an uphill battle for the two pretty much ever since the summer of 2023 — Busch’s first year with RCR.

If Street can get those struggles turned around in short order, he could foreseeably be on the shortlist of candidates to become Busch’s permanent crew chief beginning next season.

If Busch shows virtually no improvement over the next five weeks, Street may yet remain with RCR. But it’ll likely be in the capacity he’s been in so far this year. Without a notable uptick in performance from Busch in the last handful of races, RCR almost certainly won’t appoint Street to sit atop the No. 8 team’s pit box next season.
