Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

If there is one thing we can say with certainty about Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future, it’s that he wants to win another championship.

This is the one statement the Milwaukee Bucks superstar has stayed true to one season after another and all the way into this year’s training camp.

“I want to be on a team that allows me and gives me a chance to win a championship,” Antetokounmpo told reporters at Bucks media day last month. “I think it’s a disservice to basketball, just to the game, to not want to compete in a high level, to want your season to end in April.”

For a fourth straight season, Antetokounmpo looks headed toward that same fate. It’s what made this past summer particularly fascinating with speculation running rampant on a possible trade request.

That never came, even though members of the Bucks organization expected it in late July. General manager Jon Horst had flown to Greece to meet with Antetokounmpo and it’s reported the Greek superstar expressed his doubts about the quality of the Bucks roster.

Milwaukee was not going to make it easy on him. The New York Knicks may have been his preferred destination but, if Antetokounmpo was going to leave, he was going to have to force his way out. The Bucks know it’s not in his nature and that he has a fierce sense of loyalty and attachment to the city of Milwaukee.

They dared Antetokounmpo to pull the trigger. Instead, he got himself a time violation like he was at the free-throw line.

Two weeks away from the start of the 2025-26 season, we now have the clearest indication yet that Antetokounmpo’s time with the Bucks is drawing to a close. How will things play out from here?

What Does Antetokounmpo Wanting Knicks Say About Other Teams?

When trade rumors first ran rampant, the Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors were all considered potential candidates to acquire Antetokounmpo.

The Rockets went ahead and acquired Kevin Durant while the Nets couldn’t present a title-contending situation. The Raptors likely lost a lot of their luster in Antetokounmpo’s eyes after the departure of former general manager Masai Ujiri.

If Antetokounmpo isn’t seriously interested in any of the Spurs, Heat or Hawks, he may only be considering the absolute biggest markets. The Los Angeles Lakers very likely didn’t have the assets to acquire Antetokounmpo, ditto the Golden State Warriors.

This is someone who has been in Milwaukee for the entirety of his 12 NBA seasons. If he is going to leave a franchise and city he loves, it makes sense for him to want to experience life on the opposite end of the spectrum. He may also have a preference to remain in the less competitive Eastern Conference.

Golden State and the Lakers will be mindful these situations are fluid. Only wanting the Knicks in 2025 doesn’t mean he’ll feel the same way in February, next summer with a year remaining on his deal or 2027 when he’s possibly a free agent.

These two teams will be among several lining up their books for max cap space in 2027. Perhaps, there should be some accumulating the assets necessary to offer the mother of all trade packages before then.

How Should Bucks Approach Next 12 Months?

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Antetokounmpo is expected to closely monitor not only the Bucks’ performance in the first half of the season but the overall landscape of the league.

Milwaukee’s front office has already shown its hand in doing everything humanly possible to keep Antetokounmpo. The decision to stretch and waive Damian Lillard to acquire Myles Turner reeked of desperation but it may have bought the Bucks time at least until the trade deadline.

If they aren’t close to competing for home-court advantage come January, all eyes will be on Antetokounmpo. If he indicates a preference to move on, Milwaukee will likely dare him to force his way out as it reportedly just did.

Being a top-four seed but flaming out in the postseason wouldn’t actually change a whole lot for Milwaukee. Its superstar would be inclined to at least fight through the whole season, sure, but so much work lies in wait.

On Oct. 1, 2026, the Bucks can offer Antetokounmpo a four-year extension worth $275 million. That requires getting through the summer unscathed. The franchise would have to gauge his willingness to sign the deal so a corresponding decision can be made.

Daring Antetokounmpo to demand a trade in the final summer value can be redeemed for him wouldn’t be prudent. Antetokounmpo would have a very strong hand at this point. He wouldn’t have to cause a scene to force his way out, he’d simply have to admit he won’t sign an extension. That message would be as loud as a ruffling feathers but, crucially, without the theatrics, which he seemingly wants to avoid.

What Now For Antetokounmpo, Bucks?

Turning 31 in December, Antetkounmpo’s actions during his time in Milwaukee show he won’t follow the lead of some other superstars who have vocalized trade requests over the past decade.

If anything, it’ll be the opposite. Antetokounmpo will attack this season fighting to make the Bucks appear a contender. He will leave no stone unturned in being the best player he can be and helping his teammates come together to achieve a common goal.

Doing that, as he’s done since the day entered the league, will give him peace in knowing he did everything he could.

The Bucks have followed his lead and done everything they could. Brook Lopez and Jrue Holiday wouldn’t have become household names in Milwaukee without it. The same can be said of Lillard and Turner.

Reaching the Eastern Conference Finals this season, however unlikely, would appear a minimum requirement to have that effort appreciated with renewed commitment from Antetokounmpo.

You can do everything in your power and still not have done what was necessary. Winning another championship appears a necessity for Antetokounmpo. That’s where these two sides are now starting to drift apart.
