Bill Belichick Could Leave North Carolina Before The End Of The Season

Bill Belichick was supposed to bring the University of North Carolina football team to relevance and prominence in 2025. But after a disastrous start, there is an increasing possibility that he might not even make it to the end of the season.

Bill Belichick Has Discussed Buy-Out With UNC

On Wednesday afternoon, reports surfaced that Belichick has met with the university about his future. He has discussed the possibility of a buy out, according to Ollie Connolly of The Guardian, and could be looking for a new team or to enter back into the media space.

The Twitter/X thread from Connolly detailed some of the specifics of the situation. Belichick’s communication with his staff has been “weird” and “distant”, and multiple coaches were unable to get ahold of him during the team’s bye week. Members of the coaching staff at UNC have already talked to other schools about taking on roles during the College Football Playoffs, and that changes to the staff could be coming within the next two weeks.

As one coach put it, “the rats are leaving the ship.”

Issues Linger Both On And Off The Field

Brought in to improve on UNC’s 6-7 finish from a year ago, Bill Belichick might not reach that win total even if he does stay. Over the course of the first five games of the 2025 campaign, the Tar Heels have posted a 2-3 record, with their only wins coming against Charlotte and Richmond.

Against the three more formidable opponents (TCU, UCF, & Clemson), UNC has been outscored 120-33. At one point during their most recent game, they were losing 38-3 to a Clemson team that has struggled themselves to open the year.

Not only have there been struggles on the field, but things are getting ugly behind the scenes, too. There have been reported recruiting violations, which were added to when Tar Heels cornerbacks coach Armond Hawkins was suspended for allegedly giving extra benefits to players. Last month, a lawsuit was filed that alleged that UNC hired Belichick through illegal means.

There is even a chance that Bill Belichick has already coached his final game at the school. UNC is currently on their bye week, and aren’t scheduled to play again until October 17th when they visit California.
