What is Black Phone 2 About?

What do you think happens when you die in a dream? It’s time to find out the answer in Black Phone 2, the horror sequel to 2021’s The Black Phone.

Four years ago, Finney (Mason Thames) became the only known survivor (Ethan Hawke) of the Grabber after killing the masked menace. Now 17, Finney still struggles to cope with the grief and trauma caused by the abduction.

Much to his surprise, the Grabber reenters Finney’s life through his younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), who begins receiving calls in her dreams from the black phone. Gwen has visions about three boys being stalked and tortured at a winter camp, Alpine Lake.

Gwen and Finney head to Alpine Lake to put an end to her visions. However, they’re reintroduced to the Grabber, who shares a connection to their family’s history.

“Gwen and Finn must confront a killer who has grown more powerful in death and more significant to them than either could imagine,” the official synopsis reads.

Scott Derrickson, who helmed The Black Phone, returns to direct Black Phone 2 from a screenplay written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. Derrickson and Cargill also produce alongside Jason Blum.

Black Phone 2 opens in theaters on October 17, 2025.

Black Phone 2 Opening Weekend Box Office Odds & Predictions

Black Phone 2 Opening Weekend Box Office: Domestic Odds
Less than $20 million +163
$20 million to $28 million +117
Over $28 million +669

Horror is one of the only solid bets at the box office in 2025.

For example, The Conjuring: Last Rites, the ninth movie in The Conjuring universe, overperformed at the box office and became the highest-grossing film in the series at $473 million worldwide.

Black Phone 2 does not have the same pedigree as The Conjuring movies. However, 2021’s The Black Phone became a smash hit for Blumhouse with a $161.4 million worldwide gross on a budget of less than $20 million.

The Black Phone grossed $23.3 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend. Black Phone 2 should match that number, as Polymarket has an opening between $20 million and $28 million as the likeliest scenario.

Blumhouse desperately needs a hit after a slew of misfires, including M3GAN 2.0, Drop, The Woman in the Yard, and Wolf Man.

Update: Black Phone 2 opened to $27.3 million (+117) over its opening weekend.
