As NASCAR’s resident bad boy, so to speak, Denny Hamlin has made a habit of needling fans of other drivers every chance he gets.
“I just beat your favorite driver!” or a close variation of that now-infamous one-liner has been a common refrain from Hamlin after winning races the last few years.
Hamlin has admittedly relished playing the villain role, especially as he’s moved into the latter years of his illustrious NASCAR Cup Series career.
But upon collecting Cup Series career win No. 60 this past Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway where he punched a ticket to the Championship 4, Hamlin was surprisingly subdued in his post-race antics.
Rather than antagonizing the fans during his frontstretch interview, the driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota seemed overcome with emotion after scoring a milestone victory.
What Did Denny Hamlin Do After Winning At Vegas That Was So Uncharacteristic?
Before Denny Hamlin ever emerged from his race-winning vehicle at Las Vegas, in-car camera footage showed the veteran driver wiping tears from his eyes.
You might have to see it for yourself, in the X post below, to believe it.

Then, upon exiting the car, Hamlin seemed to be holding back tears at the start-finish line during his first post-race interview.
Hamlin even resisted the temptation to troll the crowd in his customary fashion.
“This is the point where I kind of give the fans some s***, but not today,” Hamlin said, eliciting a surprisingly favorable response from the paying customers in attendance. “I appreciate all of you so much.”

Hamlin then took a moment to acknowledge his father, Dennis, who has recently been ill. Later, during his more in-depth post-race interview in the infield media center, Hamlin elaborated in vague terms about his father’s health situation when someone inquired.
“Yeah, just not doing well, not feeling well,” Hamlin said of his dad. “He’s the one that got me into racing. Just took me to a racetrack when I was 5. Then made all the sacrifices financially to keep me going. Sold everything they had. We almost lost our house a couple times. Just tried to keep it all going.
“So, I’m glad he was able to see 60 (wins). That was super-important to me.”
So, Is Denny Hamlin Really The Villain He Likes To Pose As?
As much as Denny Hamlin typically jumps at the opportunity to stir the proverbial pot with fans of rival competitors, the actions of the notoriously outspoken driver on Sunday in Sin City suggest that the image he often projects might actually be a bit misleading.
Speaking during his post-race press conference, Hamlin even took it a step further.
“I’m probably softer than what I put off,” the three-time Daytona 500 winner said when a reporter asked him about his watery eyes after winning the race. “I maybe shed a tear during a love story on a movie or something if it’s a really emotional moment.”
Who knew that Hamlin could be so sentimental? Not his three children, apparently.
“I’ll never let my kids see it,” he said. “But I do have feelings. I know it’s hard to believe.”
The combination of his father’s health issues and winning for the 60th time in NASCAR’s premier series proved to be too much for Hamlin not to get choked up.
“It just was so gratifying because of all the things I talked about. Then I had the ball at the very end and made it,” Hamlin, speaking figuratively, told the reporters in his post-race press conference.
“Maybe y’all played recreational sports as a kid, had that game-winning moment. But it’s just so big for me personally, because this is what I do. This is what I’m paid to do. I knew there was no chance I was holding it back. No chance. Just let it go.”
And let the tears go, he did. Much to the amazement of probably almost everyone watching from the stands and at home.
