VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia 76ers

On the NBA’s opening day (for most teams), it wasn’t a game between the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs — the matchup featuring the No. 1 and 2 picks — headlining this rookie class. It was V.J. Edgecombe, the third overall pick, who dropped 34 points in his NBA debut against the Boston Celtics.

Edgecombe was just the third rookie in NBA history to eclipse 30 points in his first game and the first player to do so in 66 years. There is no modern precedent for this production at the literal starting line. By the end of the night, he tallied 34 points on 59 percent true shooting alongside seven boards, three assists and one steal in a 117-116 win for the Philadelphia 76ers.

His statistical performance alone deserves all of the superlative praise. But just how sustainable was Edgecombe’s performance? The 6-foot-4 rookie guard maxed out at 30 points at Baylor, reaching that mark once last season. According to Synergy, he scored 30 just twice before college, achieving the feat twice in early 2023 while playing at Long Island Lutheran High School.

Any analysis of Edgecombe must begin with his nuclear open-floor athleticism. He enters the NBA as one of its premier athletic talents, capable of outrunning and out-jumping the vast majority of his opponents. But, encouragingly, he did most of his damage in the half-court, spending just 3 of his 31 logged possessions in transition.

He made all three of his shot attempts on those possessions but Edgecombe thrived as a half-court scorer against the Celtics. While the Sixers let him bring the ball up quite a bit, his best possessions came as an off-ball attacker, as was the case for him in college, considering his limited handle.

Philadelphia was an ideal landing spot for Edgecombe, as the Sixers have a cornucopia of ball-handlers to insulate him when needed. They generated over 1.2 points per possession on 15 Edgecombe spot-up opportunities.

There’s no need for a refined, dextrous handle when attacking a switch or stampeding off the catch, at least at the moment. Boston simply had no hope of matching his speed and explosiveness downhill and lacks the rim protection chops to wall up when he arrives:

Edgecombe put up 13 3-pointers and made five of them, which was critical for opening driving lanes and forcing hard closeouts. He was a strong off-ball shooter in college and quickly showcased that in the NBA, though we’ve never seen this kind of volume from him. He shot eight threes in two college games and reached double-digit 3-point attempts in just four high school and AAU games.

He certainly won’t finish the season shooting 100 percent at the basket and making 38.5 percent of his 13 threes per game but the volume and interior scoring were as positive as could be in game one. They fueled his success as an off-ball scorer, minimizing his limitations as a true primary creator option.

When the Sixers asked their rookie phenom to handle the ball and create against set defenses in the half-court, the results were more mixed. According to Synergy, Edgecombe logged 10 pick-and-rolls (including passes) against Boston, generating six points and two turnovers on those plays.

None of these misses or turnovers were particularly egregious, as Edgeecombe missed some makeable intermediate shots and fired a tight window pick-and-roll feed that speaks to his passing vision. Philadelphia threw him into the fire, which should help his long-term development on the ball, even if the results at the moment aren’t always pretty.

He defended like a rookie, making a few plays with his athleticism and struggling at times to locate his man away from the ball. That feel for NBA defense and NBA technique will come with time, especially for a player as athletic as him.

Without discrediting Edgecombe’s performance, we should note just how porous Boston’s defense was and projects to be this season, lacking any true plus defenders beyond Derrick White. Anfernee Simons defending the perimeter and Boston’s rotation of scrap heap centers were a perfect storm for a player like Edgecombe to dominate.

Against better defenses that limit off-ball scoring and transition chances, we’ll see how Edgecombe adapts and grows. He’ll have his down moments on offense, especially when the shots aren’t falling as they did on Wednesday.

But Edgecombe flashed every bit of what could make him one of the league’s more dynamic off-ball scorers and transition creators in the NBA during his first career game. Philadelphia’s future is murky as always but his performance will spark warranted optimism for the Sixers as the season kicks off.
