On Thursday night at the Toray Pan Pacific Open, Elena Rybakina completed her mission of grabbing the eighth and final spot for the 2025 WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 1.
Rybakina had to be practically superhuman in recent weeks to close the gap and earn the spot.
Mirra Andreeva won Indian Wells and Dubai over six months ago and was a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this summer. She had 4,319 points. Andreeva is likely disappointed, but she should not be. Andreeva had a breakout season, is in Top 10, and qualified for the WTA Finals in doubles with Diana Shnaider.
Women’s Tennis Is As Competitive As Ever
There was a unique winner at each 2025 Grand Slam. Fellow teenager Victoria Mboko broke through with a WTA 1000 maiden title, and any given week, there is a talented player capable of winning the tournament regardless of ranking.
The last time a player won two WTA 1000 tournaments and did not make the WTA Finals was in 2016 when Victoria Azarenka did not play the second half of the season because of pregnancy.
The post-Serena era of women’s tennis has produced champions from all over the globe and makes the WTA weekly schedule more entertaining for fans.
