Utah Mammoth centre Logan Cooley of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania recorded his second career National Hockey League hat trick on Thursday. He accomplished the feat in a 7-4 Mammoth win over the St. Louis Blues at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Inside Look at the Hat Trick
Cooley scored all three of his goals in the first period and recorded a natural hat trick. He first put the Mammoth up 2-0 at 6:07 of the first period from Dylan Guenther of Edmonton, Alberta and JJ Peterka of Munich, Germany. Cooley then put the Mammoth up 3-0 at 7:57 of the first period from defenseman Olli Maatta of Jyvaskyla, Finland and Guenther, and then had his natural hat trick with a game-winning goal on the power-play from defenseman Mikhail Sergachev of Nizhnekamsk, Russia and Guenther at 10:55 of the first period to put the Mammoth up 4-0.
According to Quentin Carney of The Hockey News, Cooley was the first Utah Mammoth player ever to have a natural hat trick. Carney records his hat trick in a span of four minutes and 48 seconds. It was the fastest hat trick of the 2025-26 NHL regular season and the fastest hat trick since Joel Eriksson Ek of Karlstad, Sweden had a hat trick in a span of two minutes and 18 seconds in an 8-7 Wild win over the San Jose Sharks on April 9, 2025. This was part of a four goal performance for Eriksson Ek.
Cooley’s prior NHL hat trick
Cooley’s first NHL hat trick came on March 28, 2024 in an 8-4 Arizona Coyotes win over the Nashville Predators. It was the last season of the Coyotes franchise before their players went to Utah.
Cooley in 2024-25
Cooley had five goals and two assists for seven points in eight games. He was a +4 with four penalty minutes, three power-play points, 17 shots on goal, 40 faceoff wins, two blocked shots, 10 hits, one takeaway, and 13 giveaways.
Both assists came in Mammoth wins. With the first assist, he set up Nick Schmaltz of Madison, Wisconsin in a 6-3 Mammoth win over the San Jose Sharks on October 17. Like Cooley on Thursday, Schmaltz had a hat trick. The second assist came against the Blues yesterday as part of a four-point game. He helped set up Mammoth defenseman Ian Cole of Ann Arbor, Michigan for his first goal of the season. Cooley also had his takeaway against the Sharks one week ago.
