Tennis star Venus Williams

Somehow I missed American tennis legend Venus Williams making an atypical talk show appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show late last month.

Luckily, I caught it on repeat, and Queen V was so warm, endearing, and very open.

Despite being on the professional tennis scene for over half of her life, I learned new things about her from her JHud appearance.

One of those was the origin of the signature on-court victory spin.

Venus Williams Credits Hit Cult Classic Movie As Inspiration

Williams told Hudson that she was inspired by the 2001 hit movie Princess Diaries starring Anne Hathaway.

Earlier this year when she made her return to competitive tennis, Venus gave The Tennis Letter a tutorial on the wave and spin.

Tennis fans were delighted to see the wave and spin in force this summer especially at the US Open when she played singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

The 45-year-old teamed with Leylah Fernandez for women’s doubles and longtime friend and American compatriot Reilly Opelka for mixed doubles.

Williams and Fernandez went on an impressive run that ended in the US Open quarterfinals.

Her joy at playing the game at a high level after years of health issues was evident.

It is not clear how or if we will see Venus Williams in competitive tennis in 2026, but it would be a pleasure if it happened.

In the meantime, fans can catch Venus with sister Serena on their Stockton Street podcast.
