The Sacramento Kings were widely projected to be one of the worst teams in the NBA for the 2025-26 season. Their roster consisting of big names and past-their-prime players appeared doomed before things even tipped off, and they’ve limped out to a 3-7 record over the first three weeks of action.
But there could be change on the horizon, as it is being reported that the team may be open to a full rebuild.
Sacramento Kings Could Become Active On NBA Trade Market

The Kings have some nice players on their roster. Domantas Sabonis is a double-double machine and one of the more unique big man talents in the NBA, and DeMar DeRozan is still lethal from the mid-range at his advancing age. Zach LaVine finished in the top-10 in three-pointers made last season, and Keegan Murray still has plenty of upside despite suffering a bit of a down year in 2024-25.
But it is apparent that the team simply doesn’t mesh well. No matter the rotations or on-court player selection, the pieces simply aren’t fitting with one another. The offense has little flow, which starts with the logjam rotation that the Kings have at the point guard position, and they’ve dropped down to 20th in the league in average points per game after finishing in 10th place last season.
The Kings are reportedly gearing up for a full rebuild and plan to explore trades for Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and others, per @CarmichaelDave

According to local radio host and team insider Carmichael Dave, Sacramento’s front office could be preparing to do something they’ve failed to do in the past. Team owner Vivek Ranadive has always put an emphasis on remaining competitive, never committing to tearing down the roster and starting a rebuild. But that could be changing in the coming weeks and months, as Dave says the team plans to explore trades for their top players.
“The first real, true, dedicated rebuild that we’ve ever seen. Some people are going to say ‘We’ve been rebuilding for 40 (years)’. No we haven’t we’ve just been bad for 40 years.” – Carmichael Dave
In the typical dysfunction of the Sacramento Kings, they already blew their best chance at starting over. Last season at this time, De’Aaron Fox was still on the roster and was the team’s most valuable piece that could garner the picks and assets necessary to start a successful rebuild. But instead of getting the best return possible, the Kings shipped him off for 50 cents on the dollar, and took back one of the league’s worst contracts in Zach LaVine.
Now, they’ll have to collect all of the assets that they can by exploring trades of players who have limited markets around the NBA.
Dave said that the Kings front office will likely start to take action beginning in December.
