JD Vance sticks out his hand.

It might be 2025, but politicians have already started preparing for the 2028 presidential election. Will the next president be a Democrat or a Republican? View the odds for the 2028 presidential election winner.

JD Vance & Gavin Newsom Lead Their Respective Parties

California Governor Gavin Newsom stands at a podium.
California Governor Gavin Newsom holds a news conference after speaking at the 2025 California Economic Summit at the Adventist Health Arena in downtown Stockton on October 22, 2025.

Donald Trump is currently serving his second term as the President of the United States. Unless he amends the Constitution, he will not run for a third term.

Therefore, a new candidate will emerge from either the Republican or Democratic party.

On Polymarket, Vice President JD Vance (+245) is the favorite to win the Republican nomination in 2028. Because of the eventual support he will receive from Trump and his supporters, Vance has the best odds of winning the 2028 presidential election.

Vance, 41, previously served as a senator from Ohio before being selected to be Trump’s running mate in the 2024 election. Vance is widely considered one of the future leaders of the Republican Party.

For the Democrats, Gavin Newsom (+400) has the best odds of winning the nomination in 2028. Newsom has been California’s governor since 2019 and continues to skyrocket toward the top of the party.

Newsom has not announced a presidential bid. If that does happen, it will likely come after the 2026 midterm elections.

Vance and Newsom are the popular picks to represent the Republicans and Democrats, respectively.

If not them, who else could win the 2028 presidential election?

Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (+1011) is one of the fastest-rising politicians. If AOC does not run for Senate, a presidential campaign could be in her future.

Trump (+1900) has the fourth-best odds according to Polymarket. Again, Trump would need to ratify the rules to win a third term.

Marco Rubio (+2400) has the next-best odds among Republicans outside of Vance and Trump. Rubio is currently the United States Secretary of State.

Non-politicians on the list include Tucker Carlson (+3233), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (+4900), Stephen A. Smith (+9900), Kim Kardashian (+9900), and LeBron James (+9900).

Keep an eye on Ivanka Trump (+9900) and Donald Trump Jr. (+9900) as outside candidates looking to continue their father’s legacy.
