NBA Insider Says Jamahl Mosley Has Lost The Orlando Magic Locker Room

Orlando Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley is under mounting pressure just 11 games into the season, as frustration reportedly brews behind the scenes following a 5-6 start. Suddenly, early-season losses threaten to unravel a once-promising roster.

Orlando gave up four first-round picks to acquire shooting guard Desmond Bane in the offseason but the Magic remain on the outside looking in at the early-season playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. Bane recently knocked down a contested game-winner to help the Magic escape with a victory against the Portland Trail Blazers but it sounds like it’s going to take more than winning a few games to right the ship.

But while Bane’s shot gave the Magic a brief lift, it hasn’t masked the tension reportedly brewing behind the scenes.

Is Jamahl Mosley Losing The Orlando Magic Locker Room?

According to Grant Aseth of RG, sources within the organization are growing concerned that Mosley is losing the locker room.

There has been a reported “growing disconnect” between the Magic coach and his star player, especially during timeouts. Banchero has shown a lack of engagement with Mosley during timeouts, often avoiding eye contact when the coach addresses the team in huddles.

“He needs to figure it out fast,” one source said. “This is on track to go from being the fun young team that has a lot of potential to being the disappointment that gets the coach fired.”

Banchero Reportedly Showing Lack of Engagement with Head Coach

The report adds another layer to a growing narrative that Banchero and Mosley are no longer on the same page.

It comes just a few days after Banchero, who just turned 23 years old, was reluctant to attribute turnovers to an increase in pace following a loss to the Boston Celtics.

When asked if pace contributed to turnovers, Banchero answered, “Yeah, I mean, I don’t know. I don’t know about that one.”

The exchange fueled speculation that frustration may be growing in the locker room as the Magic’s offense continues to search for rhythm early in the season.

Who Could Replace Mosley As Head Coach?

If the Magic continue to stumble, league insiders believe the front office could explore a midseason coaching change and several big-name candidates are already drawing some buzz.

Former Denver Nuggets coach Mike Malone is among the top potential candidates to replace Mosley as the next Magic head coach.

Malone is known as a player’s coach with an eye for talent and a championship pedigree. He helped rebuild the Denver Nuggets from a middling franchise to a perennial contender, posting a .590 winning percentage (471-327) in nine seasons. After two rebuilding years in Denver, he led the Nuggets to seven straight winning seasons, including an NBA Championship in 2022-23.

Other potential candidates for the Magic job include Frank Vogel, Mike Budenholzer, and former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins.
