Australian tennis player Alex de Minaur is probably gaining new fans this fall. He seemingly possesses all of the qualities of an unaware self-aware athlete.
De Minaur is not a scoreboard or stats watcher so journalists broke the news that he qualified for the ATP Finals and that he would make it to the semifinal round if Carlos Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti in Thursday’s late match.
De Minaur says that he had no idea he could still reach the semifinals.
“I’m gonna be Carlos’ biggest fan tonight, that’s for sure”, he tells me in Spanish. pic.twitter.com/zkW3GgCSFM

Though he works hard match after match, he is not keeping track of these details.
What Makes De Minaur Self Aware?
After his crushing loss to Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday, de Minaur spoke openly about having to win those types of matches if he wants to advance his tennis career.
He looked as though he was emotionally shattered and feeling the weight of the loss yet was able to put everything in perspective and two days later, he turned the tide.
De Minaur defeated Fritz in straight sets, earning his first career ATP Finals win (in six tries).
His mental toughness is truly admirable.

De Minaur Is Trying To Join Rare Aussie Company By Winning ATP Finals
Lleyton Hewitt is the only Australian men’s singles player to ever win the ATP Finals. He did it twice and finished as a finalist one other time.
De Minaur would like to put himself in that rare Aussie company with a win in Turin.
It won’t be easy as Jannik Sinner is the defending champion, resounding favorite, hardcourt wizard, and de Minaur’s next opponent.
De Minaur will face Sinner on Saturday in the semifinals at a yet to be determined time.
Though he is not a stat guy, we are sure that he is aware that he is winless against him in 12 previous tries.
It would be a statement win if de Minaur could pull it off.
