Penix’s season might be over.
The second-year quarterback injured his left knee in Sunday’s 30-27 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons will place Penix on injured reserve, the team announced on Monday.
“Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a left-knee injury in Sunday’s game against Carolina,” the team said in a statement released Monday. “We are working through the medical process to determine the severity of the injury. He will be placed on the reserve/injured list and miss a minimum of four games. With the move, Kirk Cousins will assume the starting quarterback role for the Falcons at this time.”
Kirk Cousins will start for Penix. The Falcons’ next four games are against the New Orleans Saints, New York Jets, Seattle Seahawks, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Penix injured his knee in the third quarter when Carolina safety Tre’von Moehrig tackled him while throwing an incomplete pass. Penix left the game.
Cousins finished 6 of 14 for 48 yards in relief of Penix.
The Falcons are still running tests to see the severity of Penix’s injury. Penix has a history of knee injuries, having suffered two ACL tears in college.
If the Falcons are out of playoff contention by the time Penix is eligible to return, the team could elect to sit him the rest of the way to rehab his knee. Atlanta is 3-7 heading into Week 12.
Penis has thrown for 1,982 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions with a 60.1 completion percentage.

Penix is not the only Falcon injured.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, London suffered a PCL sprain in Sunday’s game. London will be out for Week 12’s game against the Saints. However, London could miss more time if the knee injury proves to be more severe after more tests.
London likely injured the knee on Atlanta’s final offensive play in regulation. London finished with seven receptions for 119 yards.
The fourth-year receiver is having an excellent season — 60 receptions for 810 yards and six touchdowns.
The Falcons face the Saints in Week 12. With another loss, the Falcons’ postseason hopes will be on life support.
