The Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators played each other over the weekend twice in Stockholm, Sweden as part of the National Hockey League Global Series. The Predators won 2-1 on Friday in overtime, and then the Penguins had an impressive 4-0 win on Sunday.
Predators’s victory
The Penguins were leading most of the game 1-0 before the Predators tied the game at one with one minute and 10 seconds left on a dramatic game-tying unassisted goal by Filip Forsberg of Oatervakla, Sweden. Then in overtime at the 44 second mark of the extra period, Steven Stamkos of Markham, Ontario scored the game-winning goal from defenseman Brady Skjei of Lakeville, Minnesota.
Penguins’s victory
The Penguins got a 4-0 shutout victory from Sergey Murashov of Yaroslavl, Russia. Murashov was only in his second NHL game and won his first NHL game as a goaltender. Murashov made 21 saves (two saves in the first period, eight saves in the second period and 11 saves in the third period).
History of NHL regular season games in Stockholm
The Penguins were involved in the first two NHL regular season games in Stockholm. The Penguins played the Ottawa Senators in two games with the Penguins winning 4-3 in overtime on October 4, 2008 on a game-winning goal in overtime by Tyler Kennedy of Sault. Ste. Marie, Ontario. The Senators won the next game 3-1 on October 5. In 2009-10, the St. Louis Blues beat the Detroit Red Wings twice in Stockholm. The first game was by a score of 4-3, and the second game was by a score of 5-3.
During the 2010-11 season, the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks were the opponents. The Sharks won the first game 3-2, and the Blue Jackets won the second game 3-2 on an overtime winner by Ethan Moreau of Huntsville, Ontario.
In October of 2011, the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks both beat the New York Rangers. The Kings won 3-2 in overtime on a game-winning goal by defenseman Jack Johnson of Indianapolis, Indiana. The Ducks beat the Rangers the next day 2-1 in a shootout.
Then in November of 2017, the Ottawa Senators beat the Colorado Avalanche in two games both by the score of 4-3. The first game went to overtime with the game-winner scored by Mark Store of Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 2019, the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-2 and 5-3. In 2023, the Senators beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-4 in overtime on an overtime winner by Tim Stutzke of Viersen, Germany, and then beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 in a shootout. Also in 2023, the Toronto Maple Leafs won two games in Stockholm. They first won 3-2 over the Detroit Red Wings, and then won 4-3 over the Wild on an overtime winner by William Nylander, who plays for Sweden internationally.
