The New Orleans Saints have released veteran wide receiver Brandin Cooks after a second stint with the team.
In a move that signals further changes in New Orleans’ wide-receiver room, the Saints parted ways with Brandin Cooks, sources confirmed.
The veteran receiver negotiated a contract adjustment to facilitate his release, ending his second tenure with the franchise that drafted him in 2014.

Throughout the season, Cooks caught 19 passes for 165 yards across 10 games and started three times before being informed of the club’s direction.
Cooks leaves a franchise that is transitioning toward a youth and flexibility-focused approach. His contract this offseason was a two-year, $13 million deal with $7.75 million guaranteed, terms that underscored both his veteran status and New Orleans’ belief in his continued value.
But the rapidly evolving receiver room and roster priorities made Cooks a mismatch for the present-day structure, prompting a mutual split.
Vibrant veteran still in demand
Even at 32, Cooks retains appeal for contenders. His career totals, over 700 receptions, nearly 9,700 yards, and 60 touchdowns across six franchises, offer proof of a durable and productive wide-out.
Teams such as the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, Los Angeles Rams, and New England Patriots are cited among his potential landing spots, each seeking a proven deep threat to complement younger targets.

For Cooks, this transition offers a chance to recalibrate. He now enters free agency as a situational asset rather than a full-time starter, with expectations adjusted accordingly.
The timing allows him to align with a team on the postseason cusp, where his experience and speed could provide value without the pressure of being the focal point.
Exiting one chapter, entering another
Brandin Cooks’ departure from the Saints represents more than roster turnover; it reflects the need for veteran stock and team strategy to align in the modern NFL.
For New Orleans, the move clears space and signals that the rebuild at receiver continues. For Cooks, the exit creates an opportunity to land where their skills align with the mission and expectations.
As he evaluates his next destination, the optics, timing, and team fit will define not just his remaining seasons but the legacy he builds in this new phase.
