Washington Wizards Coach Brian Keefe On The Hot Seat Amid 1-13 Start

The Washington Wizards named Brian Keefe their 26th head coach in franchise history in May of 2024, just months after Wes Unself Jr. was relieved of his coaching duties.

Wizards Hold Worst Record With Brian Keefe

The Wizards, however, have been just as bad if not worse under Keefe’s leadership. Through 135 games coached with Washington, Keefe holds a disappointing record of 27-108 (.200).

“There’s the laying-the-foundation phase. There’s the building it back up, and then there’s fortifying what you build,” Wizards general manager Will Dawkins said before last season.

“We’re still focused on deconstructing and laying that foundation. And I think that’s important to remind everyone that we’re still early.”

Undergoing a rebuild is one thing, but the Wizards haven’t fielded a competitive team in years. Washington endured two separate losing streaks of 16 games last season, and the team hasn’t made the playoffs since 2021.

As for this season, the Wizards have only one win through 14 games played. They rank dead last in the Eastern Conference standings below the Brooklyn Nets and Indiana Pacers, who are both 2-12.

Washington is averaging 112.6 points per game while giving up a league-worst 128.9 points per contest. The team has also dropped eight straight games against conference opponents.

The Wizards also hold the league’s worst per-game point differential, getting outscored by 16.2 points per game.

Washington Held A Players-Only Meeting

Now could be the time for Keefe to go.

Per Albert Lee of Yahoo Sports, “There is no indication that Keefe is on thin ice. He was hired to lead a team that is built to lose games in the hopes that a franchise savior is drafted in a year or two or … five.”

Following Sunday’s loss to the Brooklyn Nets, the Wizards held a players-only meeting. Coaches, including Keefe, were reportedly not in attendance for the discussion.

“We needed that talk, I think,” said third-year wing Bilal Coulibaly. “The guys just stepped up, the vets, the guys that have been used to winning. That’s what we’re trying to do here in the next year. So they had to talk to us, and they did a great job about this, and everybody was listening.”

The last time the Wizards completed a season with a winning record was in 2018, when they finished 43-39 (.524) and lost in six games of their first-round playoff series against the Toronto Raptors.

Washington also hasn’t won a playoff series since defeating the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the year prior. Under then-coach Scott Brooks, the Wizards were able to post back-to-back winning seasons.

It’s been that long.
