Washington Capitals left winger Alexander Ovechkin of Moscow, Russia has moved into fourth all-time on the National Hockey League hat trick list. Ovechkin now has 33 NHL hat tricks, which is tied with Brett Hull. He accomplished the feat in an 8-4 Capitals win over the Montreal Canadiens at Montreal’s Bell Centre on Thursday.
Who has the most NHL hat tricks?
Wayne Gretzky of Brantford, Ontario has the NHL record for the most hat tricks ever with 50. He is followed by Mario Lemieux of Montreal, Quebec, who had 40 hat tricks, and the late Mike Bossy of Montreal, Quebec, who had 39 hat tricks. Of Gretzky’s 50 NHL hat tricks, 43 have come with the Oilers, six have come with the Los Angeles Kings and one hat trick came with the New York Rangers. All of Lemieux’s 40 hat tricks came with the Pittsburgh Penguins. All of Bossy’s 39 hat tricks came with the New York Islanders. Meanwhile, Ovechkin has all 39 of his hat tricks with the Washington Capitals. As for Hull (the dual citizen, born in Belleville, Ontario but represented the United States internationally), he had 28 hat tricks with the St. Louis Blues, two with the Dallas Stars, and three with the Detroit Red Wings.

Ovechkin opened the scoring at the one minute mark of the hockey game on the power-play. Dylan Strome of Mississauga, Ontario had the assist. Ovechkin then put the Capitals up 6-4 with three minutes and 57 seconds left in the game. Once again, Strome has the only assist. Ovechkin then put the Canadiens up 7-4 from defenseman John Carlson of Natick, Massachusetts with two minutes and four seconds left in the third period into an empty net.

Even though they are tied for fourth place in the Metropolitan Division with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Pittsburgh Penguins, the Capitals are only four points back of the Carolina Hurricanes for first place.
