Bret Hart Calls Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon “Lovers” in New Interview

Bret Hart has added another wild chapter to his decades-long feud with Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon. In a new interview, Hart said he believes Michaels and McMahon were “sleeping with each other” during the late ’90s and called them “lovers.” He also said he felt “caught between two lovers” at the height of their rivalry.

What Bret Hart Said About Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon Being Lovers

“Shawn was so envious & jealous of my position that he finally had to sleep with Vince to get it. I would say it to Shawn if he was right here.I’d like to have Shawn come clean & say we were lovers – Bret Hart #brethart #shawnmichaels #vincemcmahon #WWE #fyp

Bret Hart didn’t hold back in his interview on the Johnny I Pro Show. He said he thinks Michaels gained influence backstage because of a personal relationship with McMahon, and said McMahon’s emotional reaction at the time looked like something deeper than a boss–talent dynamic.

Hart didn’t hedge at all. He said flat out that he believes Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon were “sleeping with each other,” calling them “lovers” and insisting he’s “very close to the truth.” He framed the entire late-’90s dynamic as something he only now feels comfortable spelling out directly.

In his words: “Shawn and Vince were lovers. I’m being dead honest.” He then added, “I got caught between two lovers, and I got shafted and screwed over,” tying the alleged relationship to the way the WWF handled the title picture and backstage politics during his final run.

Hart also said he wants Michaels to “come clean” about it one day: “I would actually like to have Shawn come clean and say, ‘Look, we were lovers.’ Because I’m sure they were.” He finished by saying he would repeat all of it to their faces.

Is Vince McMahon Gay?

This claim didn’t come out of nowhere. Wrestlers have made similar comments for years, usually framed as rumors, jokes or anger over power dynamics in that era. In a Kevin Nash retelling of an old Scott Hall story, McMahon allegedly described his “first homosexual experience” while trying to pitch Hall on a Goldust storyline.

In 2024, Chael Sonnen also claimed on the FLAGRANT podcast that McMahon offered pushes in exchange for sex to both men and women and named Shawn Michaels in that context. No one involved has confirmed that story, but it resurfaced again when Bret made his comments.

Fans from the old shoot-interview era will remember that Michaels–McMahon rumours were a recurring bit across early-2000s DVD shoots. Wrestlers openly joked about McMahon’s obsession with Michaels, whether it was genuine favouritism or something more. Those clips still float around Reddit and YouTube and form the backbone of the long-running speculation.

The Montreal Screwjob Context

All of this sits on top of the Montreal Screwjob, which remains the defining fracture between these three. Hart has spent years relitigating what he views as coordinated betrayal by Michaels and McMahon. His “lovers” line reframes that event through jealousy and intimacy rather than just business. It also adds another layer to the resentment he still carries about the shift in power and booking around 1996–97.

Why Bret’s Quote Is Blowing Up

McMahon’s recent scandals and departures have made people revisit old stories. Claims about sexual misconduct, NDAs and power dynamics have changed how fans read anything involving him. A rumor that would’ve been brushed off as a joke in 2005 now lands differently in 2025.

For some fans, Bret is finally saying what others tiptoed around for years. For others, it’s an example of Bret escalating old grudges into something sensational. Whatever side you fall on, it’s obvious why the video is spreading so fast.
