In 2025, J.J. McCarthy entered his second NFL season viewed as the future of the Minnesota Vikings under center. He was their first round pick from a year prior, and there were hopes that there would be a seamless transition after the departure of Sam Darnold. What’s unfolding, though, looks more like a cautionary tale than a quarterback success story.
Are The Vikings Likely To Pivot Away From JJ McCarthy?
The early signs were problematic. McCarthy missed the entire 2024 season after tearing a meniscus, stalling what should have been his rookie development year. In 2025, a high-ankle sprain cost him five games early.
When healthy, he has struggled to find rhythm. Over six starts in 2025, McCarthy has completed just 54.1% of his passes for 929 yards, with six touchdowns against nine interceptions. He’s also been sacked 20 times, lost 112 yards on those sacks, and posted a passer rating of 57.9, numbers that rank among the worst in the league.
The Vikings have had the ball four times in the 2nd half:

• 3-and-out (-12 yards)

His accuracy issues are glaring. His throws are frequently off-target, reads slow, and ball placement poor. One recent analysis described his mechanics as “jarringly persistent” failures.
Week 12’s 23–6 loss to the Packers may be McCarthy’s lowest point. He finished just 12-of-19 for 87 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions, and was sacked five times. Immediately after the game, the Vikings placed him in concussion protocol.
McCarthy Given 64% Chance To Remain Team’s Starter In 2026
Given those surroundings, speculation has grown that Minnesota might pivot away from McCarthy, possibly even as soon as 2026. The oddsmakers at BetOnline are beginning to agree with that sentiment, as they have placed -175 odds on McCarthy being the Vikings’ starting QB in 2026. Those are implied odds of just 64%.
Things won’t get any easy for JJ McCarthy in the coming weeks. This Sunday, he and the Vikings will travel to Seattle to play against the league’s 7th ranked defense, and they still have games against Detroit and Green Bay before the conclusion of the regular season.
"JJ McCarthy is definitely overthinking everything right now and it's not a fun place to be as a Quarterback..
I don't think the Vikings give up on him but I do think they will bring some high competition in"@danorlovsky7 #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/dmmZMWZX7i

The franchise is now confronted with an uncomfortable reality: they drafted McCarthy as their QB of the future, but after two injury-marred, statistically poor seasons, they may be running out of patience.
If McCarthy can’t right the ship soon, Minnesota may decide to explore other options under center come 2026, perhaps even without him.
