25 James Madison 11-1 NR

The top three teams — Ohio State, Indiana, and Georgia — are the same in the penultimate rankings for the College Football Playoff.

Texas Tech moves to No. 4, its highest ranking of the season. By putting Texas Tech at No. 4, the Red Raiders will earn a bye if they defeat BYU in the Big 12 Championship.

Ole Miss moved up one spot to No. 6. The story in Oxford should be about the team experiencing its best season in school history. Instead, the Lane Kiffin drama has dominated college football. With Kiffin at LSU, Pete Golding is now the new head coach who will guide the Rebels in the CFP.

After its last-second win in the Iron Bowl, Alabama moved up to No. 9, while Notre Dame fell back to No. 10. The committee still has Miami, which beat Notre Dame, ranked behind the Irish.

The ACC is in a precarious situation. If Virginia wins, the Cavaliers will make the College Football Playoff. If Duke somehow defeats Virginia, the committee could elect to keep the 7-5 Blue Devils out of the playoff. In that scenario, the next two highest-ranked conference champions — Tulane and James Madison — would make the CFP.

Projected College Football Bracket

Using these rankings, the College Football Playoff would look like this:

No. 1 Ohio State, No. 2 Indiana, No. 3 Georgia, and No. 4 Texas Tech would earn first-round byes.

Hosting quarterfinal matchups would be No. 5 Oregon, No. 6 Ole Miss, No. 7 Texas A&M, and No. 8 Oklahoma.

The final four spots in the CFP would go to No. 9 Alabama, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 11 fourth-highest-ranked conference champion, and No. 12 fifth-highest-ranked conference champion.

In this scenario, the 11-seed would go to Virginia (ACC), and the 12-seed would go to Tulane (AAC).

First-round matchups:

  • No. 12 Tulane at No. 5 Oregon
  • No. 9 Alabama at No. 8 Oklahoma
  • No. 11 Virginia at No. 6 Ole Miss
  • No. 10 Notre Dame at No. 7 Texas A&M

Quarterfinals:

  • Winner of No. 12 Tulane at No. 5 Oregon vs. No. 4 Texas Tech
  • Winner of No. 9 Alabama at No. 8 Oklahoma vs. No. 1 Ohio State
  • Winner of No. 11 Virginia at No. 6 Ole Miss vs. No. 3 Georgia
  • Winner of No. 10 Notre Dame at No. 7 Texas A&M vs. No. 2 Indiana
