Amid a 5-16 start, the LA Clippers made a shocking move early Wednesday morning. NBA insiders reported that the Clippers are cutting ties with veteran PG Chris Paul.
This shocked media members around the league. The 2025-26 season was supposed to be a homecoming for Paul in his final year. However, the 40-year-old has seen limited minutes with the team. On early Wednesday morning, the Clippers announced they are “parting ways” with Chris Paul. ESPN’s Bobby Marks laid out three scenarios in which the Clippers could part ways with the veteran PG.
What is the Clippers’ easiest course of action to part ways with Chris Paul?
Parting ways would mean:
– Waiving his $3.6M guaranteed contract and eating his salary
– Working on a trade starting on 12/15
– A buyout
The Clippers currently are not allowed to sign a 15th player because of the 1st apron. https://t.co/dhwuV3VbyM

The 2025-26 season is Chris Paul’s 21st year in the NBA. It’s also his seventh season and second stint with the Clippers. This year, the 40-year-old PG has seen a limited role for LA. His 14.3 minutes per game is far and away the lowest of his career. Additionally, his 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game are new career lows. Paul has appeared in 16 of the team’s 21 games so far.
Early Wednesday morning, Clippers’ President of Basketball Operations, Lawrence Frank, made a major announcement. He said the team is “parting ways” with Chris Paul. Frank made it clear that the team will work with Paul to find him a new home. The Clippers’ announcement that they are “parting ways” with Chris Paul is a broad statement.

ESPN’s Bobby Marks laid out three scenarios for the Clippers to move on from Chris Paul. The first involves the team waiving the rest of his $3.6 million deal and eating his contract. Secondly, LA could work to find a trade for the veteran PG. Marks noted that Chris Paul is not eligible for trade until December 15. Finally, the Clippers could buy out the remainder of Paul’s deal and make him a free agent.
Other insiders around the league believe a trade is the most likely scenario for the Clippers. Yossi Golzan mentioned there was no wording of Paul being waived by the Clippers. That suggests a trade could happen down the line. After starting all 82 games for the Clippers in 2024-25, the 2025-26 season has been much different for Chris Paul. Where will the veteran PG play next?
