Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks Discussing Future Amid Trade Rumors

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo could soon be playing for a new NBA team.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, “Antetokounmpo and his agent Alex Saratsis are having conversations with the Milwaukee Bucks about the two-time NBA MVP’s future — and discussing whether his best fit is staying or a move elsewhere. … A resolution to these talks is expected in the coming weeks.”

Bucks Have Struggled Since 2021 NBA Finals

During the offseason, sources told Charania that Antetokounmpo would “examine the Bucks’ first 25 or so games this season” to determine if they could compete with the rest of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

The Bucks are currently 9-13 and have lost eight of their past nine games. They rank 11th in the Eastern Conference standings and have gone 7-9 against conference opponents.

Charania’s report also comes a day after Antetokounmpo deleted multiple Bucks-related social media posts on both Instagram and X, igniting trade rumors across the NBA community.

Since the Bucks won their second NBA title in 2021 and first since 1971, they’ve been unable to reach the conference semifinals in the postseason, including three straight first-round exits.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Wants Another Ring

During Bucks media day in September, Antetokounmpo expressed his desire to win a second NBA title and confirmed reporting from Charania that he was “open-minded” over the summer about exploring whether his “best long-term fit” was in Milwaukee or elsewhere.

“The same thing I’ve been saying my whole career, I want to be in a team that allows me and gives me a chance to win a championship,” Antetokounmpo said then. “I think it’s a disservice to basketball, just to the game, to not want it to compete in a high level, to want your season to end in April.”

Antetokounmpo, who turns 31 this Saturday, thought about leaving the Bucks in the past.

“It’s not the first time. I had the same thoughts last year,” he continued. “I had the same thoughts two years ago. And I had the same thoughts five years ago. It is never going to change. I want to be among the best. I want to compete with the best, and I want to win another championship.”

According to Spotrac, Antetokounmpo remains under contract through 2027-28, but he can become a free agent in the 2027 offseason if he declines his $62.8 million player option.

Per ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Antetokounmpo will be eligible for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension through the 2030-31 season, starting on Oct. 1, 2026.

If moved, he’d be able to sign the same deal with another team six months after a trade.
