NFL Rumors: Darius Slay Will Not Be Reporting To The Buffalo Bills

In a surprising twist on the NFL transaction front, veteran cornerback Darius Slay will not report to the Buffalo Bills after the team officially claimed him on waivers earlier this week. The decision immediately throws Slay’s future into uncertainty and creates another unexpected wrinkle for a Buffalo defense that was hoping to add experience to its secondary.

Darius Slay’s NFL Future Is In Question After No-Show In Buffalo

Slay, a longtime Pro Bowl corner and one of the most respected defensive backs of his era, was placed on waivers following his release, giving teams the opportunity to assume the remainder of his contract. The Bills, dealing with injuries and inconsistency at cornerback, moved quickly to submit a claim. Instead of reporting, however, Slay has chosen to remain absent from the team.

As NFL insider Adam Schefter is reporting, Slay is unsure if he wants to continue playing football at all.

For Buffalo, the setback is notable. The Bills entered the second half of the season looking for reinforcements in the secondary, particularly with their ongoing struggles defending opposing passing attacks. Slay’s experience and leadership ability would have provided an immediate boost both on the field and in the locker room. Instead, the team is now left scrambling for alternatives at a critical point in the season.

Buffalo can explore its options, which could include placing Slay on a reserve list, or working towards his release. Meanwhile, other teams in need of cornerback help will be monitoring the situation closely should Slay become a free agent.

On Tuesday, Slay was officially waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers in his first year with the team. The move was described as a mutual agreement between the two sides. Slay, who had signed a one-year, fully guaranteed $10 million deal in March 2025, had initially been expected to bolster Pittsburgh’s secondary alongside their younger cornerbacks.

He had been a healthy scratch in the Steelers’ most recent game before the release.

Darius Slay has playing in 10 games so far this season, and has notched 36 total tackles and 3 passes defended. After notching 28 interceptions during his first 11 years in the league, he hasn’t picked off a pass since October 2023.
