Timberwolves Trade Rumors: Minnesota Could Target Dallas’ Kyrie Irving

At 15-8, the Timberwolves are sixth in the Western Conference. Minnesota is 7-3 over its last 10 and has won five consecutive games. On Monday, December 8, the Timberwolves will host the Phoenix Suns.

To begin the 2025-26 season, Anthony Edwards is being used as Minnesota’s primary point guard and ball handler. Mike Conley lost his starting PG role this offseason. With a 15-8 start to the year, the Timberwolves are eager to make an upgrade at PG. NBA insider Scoop B. Robinson reported that Minnesota has interest in adding Kyrie Irving.

Is Kyrie Irving a realistic trade target for the Timberwolves?

In each of the last two seasons, the Timberwolves have been contenders in the West. Minnesota made a deep playoff run in 2024 and 2025. They lost in the Western Conference Finals both seasons. The Timberwolves are reportedly interested in making an upgrade at PG in 2025-26. Julius Randle leads the team in assists per game, and Anthony Edwards handles a majority of the ball-handling duties.

According to NBA insider Scoop B. Robinson, that’s not a role that Minnesota wants Edwards to play long-term. Robinson reported that the Timberwolves are in the market for a PG. One player who has been discussed in rumors is Dallas’ PG Kyrie Irving. The 33-year-old tore his ACL in March 2025 and has yet to play in 2025-26 for Dallas. It’s currently unknown when Irving will return.

Despite Irving’s injury, the Timberwolves reportedly remain interested in the one-time NBA champion. Scoop B. Robinson said the team believes Irving could be their missing piece to contend for a championship. He added that Anthony Edwards has been advocating for the move. Irving is an experienced PG who could immediately take over Minnesota’s offense when healthy.

Even without a true PG in 2025-26, the Timberwolves are 15-8. The Timberwolves have a strong roster. Adding a legitimate PG would take Minnesota to the next level. Scoop B. Robinson suggested that Dallas could be forced to trade Irving if the season starts slipping away. The 2025-26 NBA trade deadline is Thursday, February 7.
