With a win on Saturday vs. the Rockets, the Mavericks are 9-16 in 2025-26. Dallas is 5-5 over their previous 10 after a slow start to the season.
The Mavs are in a unique situation this year. They are right on the border of being a contender in the West while also being in posistion to tank. Dallas’s next two months will be telling for the future of the organization. NBA insiders have reported that the team would part ways with veterans on the roster. That includes Klay Thompson. If he is traded, ESPN’s Shama Charania said that Thompson wants to play for a “contender.”

After spending the first 11 years of his NBA career with the Warriors, Klay Thompson left the team in free agency. He signed a three-year, $50 million deal with the Mavericks. Thompson joined a team that had just made a run to the NBA Finals with Luka Doncic as the franchise player. In his first season with Dallas, former general manager Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. That significantly impacted the Mavs’ opportunity to compete in the Western Conference.
That is not what Klay Thompson signed up for when he joined Dallas in free agency. ESPN’s Shams Charania said there are reports around the league that the fourth-time NBA champion wants to be traded. He added that Thompson wants to join a “contender” for the final two years of his contract. The 35-year-old is eager to add to his historic career. Chances are, it doesn’t happen with Dallas.

Klay Thompson started the year poorly for the Mavs in 2025-26. That’s why his statistics are down through his first 23 games of the season. Thompson’s 11.0 points per game is the lowest average of his career. Additionally, his .354% from beyond the arc is a personal worst. The veteran SF picked up his production for the Mavericks in mid-November.
In 2025-26, Klay Thompson is on the books for $16.6 million and another $17.4 million in 2026-27. Those are the final two years of his three-year deal with Dallas. For the production Thompson is giving the team, that’s not exactly a beneficial contract. It could be difficult for the Mavs to trade Thompson at the deadline. We’ll wait and see if the four-time NBA champion finishes the year with the Mavs.
