San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama Expected To Return For NBA Cup Semifinals

San Antonio Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama is expected to return for Saturday’s NBA Cup semifinal matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder in Las Vegas, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania on Friday.

Spurs List Victor Wembanyama As Probable

The Spurs have officially upgraded Wembanyama to probable on the injury report. The final clearance will reportedly come after Friday’s practice, a team source told Charania.

Wembanyama, who will turn 21 in January, has been sidelined since Nov. 14 due to a left calf strain. The former NBA Rookie of the Year returned to practice this week and has taken part in multiple 5-on-5 sessions.

“Obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said last month. “Don’t want to push it there.”

San Antonio has gone 9-3 in the last 12 games that Wembanyama missed, winning its past two NBA cup group play games and Wednesday’s quarterfinal over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Through 12 games (all starts) this season, Wembanyama is averaging career highs of 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 34.7 minutes per outing while shooting a career-best 50.2% from the field and 34.5% from deep.

Wemby Led San Antonio To Its First 5-0 Start

Despite missing a dozen games, Wembanyama still ranks second in the league in blocks (43).

In San Antonio’s 125-92 season-opener win over the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 22, he recorded a season-high 40 points on 15-of-21 (71.4%) shooting from the floor and 9-for-11 (81.8%) from the foul line.

Earlier this season, Wemby led the Spurs to their first 5-0 start in franchise history with a fifth straight double-double, posting a team-high 26 points to go with 18 rebounds, six assists, and five blocks in a 107-101 home win over the Miami Heat on Oct. 30.

He became the second player in NBA history behind Bob McAdoo (1975) to average at least 30 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocks through the first five games of a season since 1973-74, when blocks became an official stat.

Assuming everything goes well, Saturday’s game will mark the first time that San Antonio has De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and Wembanyama active for the same game.

The Spurs (17-7) need all four stars if they want to upset the Thunder (24-1).
