Oklahoma City Thunder star guard Jalen Williams unveiled Wednesday that he didn’t watch the NBA Cup final Tuesday night between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks.
Spurs Eliminated Thunder In NBA Cup Semifinals
Williams, 24, was likely not interested in watching the final game after San Antonio eliminated the Thunder in the NBA Cup semifinal matchup in Las Vegas last Saturday.
“I watched The Town (2010) and I watched Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and then I Facetimed my parents, and that was it,” he told reporters when asked his thoughts on the NBA Cup final.
Oklahoma City carried a 16-game winning streak into the contest. The team’s last defeat was Nov. 5 at Portland. The Thunder are currently 24-2, the second-best start behind only the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors (25-1).
Spurs star center Victor Wembanyama returned from a 12-game absence and finished with 22 points and nine rebounds, while teammate Devin Vassell scored 23 points.
Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 29 points, while Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams each totaled 17. Alex Caruso also added 11 points off the bench.
San Antonio defeated the Thunder to advance to their first-ever NBA Cup final, where the Spurs lost 124-113 to the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.
Knicks Will Not Hang NBA Cup Banner
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Wednesday that New York has decided against hanging a banner at Madison Square Garden for winning the NBA Cup.
The past two winners, the Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks, have banners in their respective arenas. The Knicks haven’t hung a team banner since winning the Eastern Conference in 1999.
New York coach Mike Brown assumed a banner would go up after winning the championship.
“There’s a lot of positives about it,” Brown said. “But the most positive is being able to hang a banner up in MSG, the most iconic arena in the league.”
Jalen Brunson, who was named the NBA Cup MVP, also seemed to have his sights set on helping the Knicks reach the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
“I don’t think we’re having a parade,” he said. “We’re going to enjoy this. But once we leave tomorrow, we’re moving on.”
The Thunder host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.
