Ament entered the college season with the buzz of a future top pick contender, but his start at Tennessee hasn’t reflected that. Some scouts and evaluators will value his elite physical tools and outside shooting projection as a fit in the modern NBA and others will point to his underwhelming production, especially against strong teams, so far. Where in the 2026 NBA Draft might he land?

Nate Ament — Wing, Tennessee (19.5 years old)

Nate Ament Scouting Report & NBA Comparison

  • Offensive role: Movement Shooter/Complementary Scorer
  • Defensive role: On-Ball Stopper/Gap Defender

It’s easy to imagine Ament filling needs on a variety of team builds and structures like Parsons, as coaches won’t have trouble fitting gigantic, versatile shooters like them into lineups. Similar to a player like Jabari Smith Jr., Ament will handle the ball like a primary in college, but he’ll likely scale down and play an off-ball, 3-and-D role like Smith does in Houston.

NBA Comparison: Jabari Smith Jr., Chandler Parsons

Strengths

  • Excellent outside shooting projection with NBA shot versatility, excellent touch, 3-point volume and a strong pre-NCAA track record
  • Impressive off-dribble shooting prospect who only needs small space to find jumpers from all over the court
  • Prototypical wing measurables allow him to easily shoot over smaller contests and contain players at the point-of-attack
  • Improved foul-drawer with more strength creation chops, contact-seeking physicality and some footwork/pump-fake craft
  • Length allows for deflections and steal generation, size and instincts to stick arms in passing lanes and dig out weak handles

Weaknesses

  • Extremely limited advantage creator with the basketball, lacks a controlled/creative handle, explosiveness or pacing to find separation
  • Poor decision maker and playmaker out of structure, can make basic reads in transition/sets but struggles to process in fluid situations
  • Added muscle seems to have zapped some mobility on defense, less effort and activity than before college
  • Lacks vertical athleticism to make the most of his height and length as a rim protector

2026 NBA Draft Projection: Round 1, Pick 10-14

Ament’s limitations as an on-ball creator are clear in his role at Tennessee, likely lacking the feel or athleticism to function as an NBA primary. But in the pros, Ament should thrive in a scaled-down role, sprinting off of screens, attacking off ball and playing with more energy on defense. He’ll likely go higher than this in the actual draft given how the league values his archetype, but size and shooting often provide players a sturdy NBA floor.
