The NFL has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf for an incident that occurred with a fan during Sunday’s game at Ford Field.

DK Metcalf Suspended

The Steelers’ win against the Detroit Lions is what fans should be talking about. Unfortunately, an incident between Metcalf and a fan has quickly become the game’s biggest story.

The NFL has suspended Metcalf for two games without pay for his actions with the fan, the league announced on Monday.

“Metcalf’s actions violate league policy, which specifies that ‘players may not enter the stands or otherwise confront fans at any time on game day, and … if a player makes unnecessary physical contact with a fan in any way that constitutes unsportsmanlike conduct or presents crowd-control issues and/or risk of injury, he will be held accountable,'” the league said in a statement.

During the game, Metcalf approached a fan with a blue wig in the front at Ford Field. Video evidence shows Metcalf grabbing the fan and then swinging his arm toward his face. The video does not prove whether Metcalf’s punch hit the fan.

Because a flag was not thrown on the field, Metcalf remained in the game. The Steelers won 29-24.

Metcalf will now miss the Steelers’ Week 17 game against the Cleveland Browns and the Week 18 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Metcalf is eligible to return to the active roster on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Metcalf plans to appeal the suspension.

Who was the Fan Involved in the Incident?

According to the Detroit Free Press, the fan involved in the altercation is named Ryan Kennedy of Pinckney, Michigan.

“What, my full name isn’t DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf,” Kennedy said. “He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that, and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt. I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”

Pelissero also reported that a source close to Metcalf said that Kennedy used a derogatory word toward Metcalf’s mother. The source says that the word is “something we both know you don’t call a black man.”

In a statement released by Shawn Head and Sean Murphy of Head Murphy Law Firm (via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor), Kennedy called the allegations “completely false.”

“Ryan Kennedy categorically denies using the ‘N-word,’ the ‘C-word,’ or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur during the incident that occurred on Dec. 21, 2025, at Ford Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers-Detroit Lions game,” Kennedy’s statement reads.

The statement also said that Kennedy has been subjected to “harassment, threats, and messages advocating violence.”
