Mason Marchment has immediate impact for the Blue Jackets

A week ago, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Seattle Kraken made a trade before the National Hockey League holiday roster freeze was in effect. (Under NHL rules, no player can be traded from 11:59 PM local time on December 19 to 12:01 AM on December 28). In this transaction, the Blue Jackets acquired 30 year old left winger Mason Marchment of Uxbridge, Ontario from the Kraken for a fourth round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft and a second round pick in the 2027 NHL Entry Draft.

Fifth NHL franchise

Marchment has previously played for four NHL teams. He was with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2019-20, two seasons with the Florida Panthers from 2020 to 2022, three seasons with the Dallas Stars from 2022 to 2025, and 29 games this season with the Kraken.

Marchment’s statistics with the Kraken

In 29 games, Marchment had four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 29 games. He was a -4 with 26 penalty minutes, three power-play points, one game-winning goal, 46 shots on goal, 10 faceoff wins, 10 blocked shots, 38 hits, nine takeaways, and 39 giveaways.

Marchment’s game-winning goal with the Kraken came on October 9, in Marchment’s Kraken debut. Marchment scored from defenseman Brandon Montour of Brantford, Ontario at 3:50 of the second period and put Seattle up 2-1 at the time.

Why are Blue Jackets fans excited about Marchment’s play?

Marchment played two games for the Blues Jackets before the three day Christmas break, and showed off his scoring skills. He scored one goal last Saturday in his Columbus debut in a 4-3 Blue Jackets loss to the Anaheim Ducks, and then was the absolute difference maker on the ice this past Monday in a 3-1 Blue Jackets win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Where Marchment had his presence felt was in the first period on the power-play, as he scored twice with the man advantage. Marchment scored the first two goals of the game. He opened the scoring from defenseman Damon Severson of Melville, Saskatchewan and Dmitri Voronkov of Angarsk, Russia at 4:07 of the opening frame, and then scored the game-winning goal with 24 seconds left in the first period. Boone Jenner of Dorchester, Ontario and Severson had the assists on an all-Canadian goal.

Marchment scored the goals in two different ways. The first goal was from a powerful shot in the slot, and the second goal was on a tip in. At 6’5″, 210 pounds, do not be surprised if the Blue Jackets use Marchment frequently in front of the net.
