One of the biggest stories in the National Hockey League season in 2025-26 is how bad the Winnipeg Jets have been. Just last season, the Jets won the Presidents’ Trophy with 116 points. Now this season, they are tied with the Chicago Blackhawks for the fewest points in the entire National Hockey League. The Jets and Blackhawks both have 34 points. Winnipeg’s record is 15 wins, 18 regulation losses and four losses in extra time.
How bad have the Jets been lately?
Winnipeg has lost six games in a row. In this stretch they have been beaten 3-2 in overtime by the Ottawa Senators on December 15, 1-0 to the St. Louis Blues on December 17, 3-2 to the Colorado Avalanche on December 19, 4-3 in overtime to the Utah Mammoth on December 21, 4-3 in overtime to the Minnesota Wild on December 27, and 3-1 to the Edmonton Oilers on December 29. It should be noted that the Jets have lost five of the six games by only one goal. In the game where they lost to the Oilers by two goals, they outshot Edmonton 42-20, but Clavin Pickard outplayed the reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy winner, Connor Hellebuyck.
Timely goal scoring a problem
The Jets lost two of their six games in overtime. They were able to generate a point through 60 minutes of action, but gave up a goal in the first minute of the extra period in losses to the Mammoth and Wild last week. The overtime heroes for Utah and Minnesota were Americans Clayton Keller of Chesterfield, Missouri and Matt Boldy of Milford, Massachusetts respectively.
No points from eight Jets
Eight Jets have failed to register a point in the last six games. They are Luke Schenn, Nino Niederreiter, Dylan DeMelo, Vladislav Namestnikov, Colin Miller, Haydn Fleury, Dylan Samberg, and Cole Koepke. The zero points from Niederreiter and Namestnkov are noteworthy. Niederreiter has had 57 points in a single season with the Wild before, while Namestnikov has had 48 points in the past.
Subpar goaltending
Meanwhile, Hellebuyck is 0-3 in that time and only has a save percentage of .882. That is 43 percentage points worse than his .925 save percentage from last season.
Tough climb to catch up
The three best teams in the National Hockey League at the moment are all based in the Central Division. The Colorado Avalanche lead with 65 points. The Dallas Stars are second with 57 points and the Wild are in third place with 54 points. Winnipeg is 20 points back of Minnesota for third place.
